Expert Profile

Tan Teng Ju graduated with a First Class Honours in Bachelor of Science in Bioindustry from University Putra Malaysia. With an ambition to be a professor, he decided to pursue a Ph. D. in Food Science and Technology at Cornell University, New York in August 2008, under the supervision of Dr. Carmen I. Moraru. Teng Ju was the recipient of the Special Fund Award by the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) for his significant work that could help improve the economic position of the dairy industry. Upon completion of his doctorate, Teng Ju returned to Malaysia in September 2013 and he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in November 2013.
Teng Ju mainly teaches courses in Food Biotechnology Concentration that are for students in the Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) programme. He is the instructor for Food Process Engineering (SBT 4353), Food Chemistry (SBT 4333), Food Biotechnology (SBT 4313) and Fermentation Technology (SBT 2133). Teng Ju's current research grant focuses on the optimization of operating conditions for supercritical fluid extraction of patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) essential oil. He has supervised two undergraduates and presently he has seven undergraduates doing their final year projects under his supervision.
Teng Ju has published papers in Malaysian journal (Malaysian Oil Science and Technology) and international journals with impact factor (Journal of Dairy Science, Journal of Food Engineering, Journal of Food Lipids). He has also presented his research in many international conferences (American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) Joint Annual Meeting Malaysian International Cocoa Conference, Oils and Fats International Congress). As an educator and researcher, he hopes give back to the community through his teaching and research efforts.
