Library
With the establishment of a satellite campus for the Centre for Foundation Studies in Nilai, the IIUM-CFS Library branch now has two sites: the main Library in Petaling Jaya caters for the Sciences programme while the Library in Nilai is for the Arts programme. The Library provides resources, services and other related facilities to meet the learning, teaching, and research needs of students and staff of the Centre. The library’s collection consists of approximately 100,000 books, bound journals, multimedia and electronic resources.
The subject coverage is in accordance with the disciplines of Foundation programmes, which include Islam, Law, Economics, Languages (mainly English and Arabic), Architecture, Human Sciences, Engineering, Pharmacy and other related subjects. The collections are organized using the Library of Congress Subject Headings and arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification Scheme. Services offered by the library include borrowing privileges, information searching skills, Internet facilities, reference services, search assistance, interlibrary loan and document delivery, as well as photocopying services. Other facilities offered are the reading areas, individual study carrels, multipurpose and discussion rooms and audio-visual viewing rooms. In addition, there are ASTRO TV programmes that provide three channels, i.e., National Geographic, Discovery and CNN. The Leisure Reading collection has also been added to offer all types of recreational or pleasure reading, including fiction and nonfiction, bestsellers, cartoons, gardening, cooking, sports, health, etc. The loan privilege for these materials is the same as the general loan collection.
Students, academic and administrative staff can avail themselves of a user friendly system and an environment conducive for study. The Library’s OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) provides bibliographical access to the library’s collection. Other pertinent information including facilities pertaining to borrowing, reservation and renewal of loans and digital library services are accessible through the Library’s Homepage at http://www.hip.lib.iium.edu.my. Users are welcome to visit the library blog at http://blogs.iium.edu.my/cfslib/ Automated book borrowing (self-check) machines are also provided to enable book loans and book renewals. Library briefings and guided tours are conducted at the beginning of academic sessions to familiarize students with the library. To enable students to use the library resources, services and facilities effectively, library education sessions are conducted as requested by lecturers and students.
