The Project:
“Design of microseparator for segregating and harvesting of single cell on lab on chip platform”
Component analysis of blood is a key diagnostic step in the detection of diseases. The separation of plasma from blood cells is critical for the accuracy of diagnostic tests because cellular fractions can create discrepancies in blood analysis. Hence, micro separation technique offers promising solutions for clinical blood processing.
The design could be integrated into lab-on-chip or point-of-care(POC) diagnostic tools which allow early detection of diseases.This passive microseparator also does not consume energy for cell separation. Hence, the proposal will have huge contributions in the development of an affordable POC diagnostic tools.
The Requirements:
  • PhD/Master/Degree in Engineering (Electrical & Electronics, Biotechnology) or Physics or equivalent.
  • Final Year students who have interests in pursuing their masters or PhD or current MSc students who are looking for a project are encouraged to apply.
  • Must be able to work independently and must finish given tasks within the required time frame.
  • Must agree with the terms and conditions of the contract.
  • Monetary incentive is available for 18 months or longer to suitable candidate.

The Project:

“Magnetic blood cells microseparator for segregating and harvesting of single cell on lab on chip platform” 

Pandemic diseases including dengue, malaria, and zika have raised serious challenges for global health.To control these dangerous diseases, there is a need for a rapid and simple diagnostic tools to detect breakouts in the field. Component analysis of blood is a key diagnostic step in the detection of diseases. The separation of plasma from blood cells is critical for the accuracy of diagnostic tests because cellular fractions can create discrepancies in blood analysis. Hence, microseparation techniques offer promising solutions for clinical blood processing.

Problems to control cells' movements on a bio-analysis system have been tackled in the previous work (FRGS13-024-0265) by using a novel microseparator that combines magnetophoresis(MAP) and hydrodynamics techniques. The microseparator is designed such that blood cell components i.e. white blood cells(WBCs), red blood cells(RBCs) and plasma, would be separated in static and continuous flows using their cells native characteristics i.e. shape, size and their magnetic susceptibilities. The microseparator was simulated using the finite element software COMSOL Multiphysics® showed that 90% of the RBCs and 93% of the WBCs could be separated when flowed in the system through dedicated outlets respectively.

URGENT: Two Masters by research position in the area of Electrical and Electronic Engineering – Food Security, investigate and characterize the Ultrasonic Reflection for High Value Pure Liquid Material is available at the Faculty of Engineering, IIUM.

Title of project:

Investigation and Characterization of Ultrasonic Reflection Utilising Spectrum Unfolding for High Value Pure Liquid Materials

Abstract:

Any high value materials, high value liquid or lipid such as Illipe Butter (33 USD/kg) or Extra Virgin Olive Oil (4.50 USD/kg) are subject to fraud, either through substitution of materials or reduction in concentration by addition of filler materials. It is possible to verify the liquid through standard method. This usually requires off-site, relatively expensive and delayed in validation. Multiple in-situ approach available - ultrasound or mass chromatography. However, ultrasound are prone to error due to temperature, and mass chromatography requires complicated sample preparation. A system which does not requires a sample preparation, are able to compensate for the temperature changes is needed. There are various ultrasound methods to compensate for the temperature change, however this requires huge amount of baseline measurements. In this research the merger of nuclear engineering technique via spectrum unfolding, is expected to reduce such need. The research will be conducted in 5 main phase - identification and clustering of high value liquid, development of ultrasound setup, calibration and experimentation arrangement. Finally, the preliminary setup arrange will be automated, for multiple experimental run. Clustering and data analysis will be conducted based on the experimental data, and accuracy of the proposed method published. It is expected that from this research, a new signal process technique in ultrasound analysis incorporating spectrum unfolding primary focusing on high value liquid be develop, with standard water calibration is developed. In addition, a framework to identify the liquid based on real time identified, with update to the textbook value on specific liquid based on reflection acoustic principle. A PRGS proposal will be noted, to further develop the system in portable form. This research is significant as it will add to the economic growth of the nation by reduction of fraud, thus increasing the value and trust of Malaysian Products.

URGENT: One Master by research position in the area of Green Technology / Air Conditioning Cooling system utilising Solar Energy / Recycled Cooling Mechanism is available at the Faculty of Engineering, IIUM.

Title of project:

Improving Coefficient of Performance (COP) via Combination of Photovoltaic/thermal (PVT), Thermoelectric Coolers and Absoption Refrigeration System.

Abstract:

Fossil fuels have caused various consequential environmental damage and degradation to human health. One of the main consumers of this fossil fuel (around 85% in Malaysia) is in generation of electricity. Malaysian consumed 90% of its energy in the form of electricity, of which 57% are utilised to run the air-conditioning system for a typical Malaysian office. According to Suruhanjaya Tenaga, the total energy consumption in (GWh) has shown year to year increase from 21500 (2003) 2003 to 29000 (2006). Environmental-friendly air-conditioning technology is needed. Multiple researches have been performed on the Photovoltaic/Thermal (PVT), Thermoelectric air-conditioning (TEAC) and refrigeration (TER) and Absorption Air-Conditioning (AAC) and refrigeration (AR) systems. However, these researches were conducted based on a single domain - PVT, TEAC or AAC on their own, or combination of PV/PT with refrigeration cycles. These systems have their own merits from performance, cost and size. Given, the current need to reduce fossil fuel and stricter legislation reducing/eliminating use of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) or hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) based refrigerant, an alternative solution that combined the strength of each system is proposed. The main objective of the research is to identify optimum solar panel size using stochastic data and to compare the performance and energy saving of individual and hybrid system. The research will be performed in five stages: Modelling for the combination of PVT, TEAC, AAC, Identification of suitable combination of PVT, TEAC, AAC, Investigation and analysis of the combined system and Model validation and analysis. The method focuses on a holistic approach of modelling, identifying and optimising the energy balance output from PVT (Electrical & Thermal), TEAC (Thermal) into input in TEAC (Electrical) and AAC (Thermal). From the project, a better coefficient of performance (COP) in term of energy system and balance is expected; when the novel hybrid integrated PVT/TEAC/AAC system is implemented.
