Below are lists of frequently asked questions that we hope will help you with your application.

Q1: What are the postgraduate programmes offered at the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance ?

i) Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Banking and Finance (PIBF)

Q2: How do I obtain more information on the programmes?

Q3: What are the admission requirements?

• General Requirements for Master and Postgraduate Diploma programmes :

A relevant Bachelor’s degree with good grades from an accredited institution of higher learning or any other certificates recognised to be equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and with relevant professional experience.

• General Requirements for Doctoral Programmes:

i) A relevant Bachelor’s degree with good grades from an accredited institution of higher learning or any other certificates recognised to be equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and with relevant professional experience AND;

ii) A relevant Master’s degree with good grades from an accredited institution of higher learning.

iii) Research proposal in identified area. (All academic qualifications must be recognised by the Senate of the university)

Q4: Do I need working experience to apply for the postgraduate programmes?

Working experience is desirable, especially for those with minimum academic achievements. However, it is not necessary.

If you have working experience in the financial services industry, please indicate in the application form and please provide the official documents from your employer.

Q5: Can I apply before obtaining my final grades?

Yes. Please attach all certified copies of the grades you have achieved so far, however your application will only be processed upon submittion of your results with graduation status.

GRADING SYSTEM : Please ensure that your academic transcript contains the grading system used to enable us to evaluate your academic qualifications).

In the event that the mode of your previous degree is by research only, please provide a certification letter from the university indicating that the mode of the programme is by research and hence no Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) or percentage or categories of passes is applicable in the full academic transcript.

Q6: Do I need to submit a translated version of my academic certificates?

Yes. To ensure prompt evaluation of your application form, please submit certified copies of your academic credentials. If your certificates are in a language other than English and Bahasa Malaysia, an English version translated by a certified translator is required. Please note that an application that is not complete and is not accompanied by the certified true copies of all certificates/relevant documents will not be considered.

Q7: Do I need to submit 2 referees report?

Yes. You need to submit reports from two (2) academic referees, however not necessarily from your former lecturers. The referees could be from your employer or any well-known person who can attest your ability to further your studies.

Q8: Is there an application fee?

Yes. There is a non-refundable application processing fee of USD 25 (applicable to international applicants residing outside Malaysia) OR RM 75.00 (applicable to Malaysian applicants and international applicants residing in Malaysia) in the form of money order/bank draft/postal order payable to the Executive Director, Finance Division, International Islamic University Malaysia. Cash or personal cheques are not accepted. Application forms that are sent without the processing fee will not be processed.

Q9: When are the application deadlines?

Please check the deadlines at the Centre for Postgraduate Studies website http://www.iium.edu.my/cps . Application forms received after the deadline will be processed for the next intake.

Q10: How do I get the application form?

• The form can be downloaded from the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance website (http://www.iium.edu.my/iiibf) or University’s Centre for Postgraduate Studies website (http://www.iium.edu.my/cps )

• You will need to complete the application form and attach a certified copy of your degree certificate and other supporting documents that have been specified in the application form.

• You should also attach a certified copy of your English Language Test result.

Q11: How can I apply online?

Q13: How soon can I expect to hear from the university?

The process is centrally managed by the University’s Centre for Postgraduate Studies office. If you need additional information after submitting your application, it is best to contact Centre for Postgraduate Studies.

Please be patient. The admissions process is complex and may take a significant amount of time of between 6 to 8 weeks or even more. Kindly plan your admission date and apply early.

Q14: What are the language entry requirements?

The language entry requirements are as follows:

For Ph.D programme, an applicant must produce satisfactory proof of proficiency of English Language. The English language proficiency is as follows:

Thesis written in English

• The Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550 OR

• The International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) with a score of 6.0 OR

• The IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT) with a minimum score 6.0.

Thesis written in Arabic

• The Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 OR

• The International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) with a score of 5.0 OR

• The IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT) with a minimum score 5.0.

For Master and Postgraduate Diploma programmes, an applicant must produce satisfactory proof of proficiency of English Language:

• The Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550 OR

• The International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) with a score of 6.0 OR

• The IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT) with a minimum score 6.0.

Q 15: Does the University offer any language support?

Students may enroll into any of the English language-related courses offered at the University prior to the commencement of the postgraduate programme. These are run by the Institute of Language Advancement. Check the relevant website at: http://www.iium.edu.my/ifla .

Applicants are strongly advised to obtain the English language requirement prior to enrolment. An applicant will not be able to proceed with the programme if not meeting the minimum requirement.

Exemption : Is given only to those who have undertaken regular programmes of studies and graduated from universities that use English as the medium of instruction in English–speaking countries or who have graduated from the IIUM in a programme with English as the medium of instruction.

Q16: If I want to apply for a PhD programme of study, do I need to provide a research proposal along with my application form?

Yes. A research proposal is very essential for Ph.D admission. An application will not be processed without the research proposal.

Q18: How do I prepare a research proposal?

Please take note that research proposal should be an original piece of research and therefore an applicant should demonstrate very specifically the significance and the contribution of the research. Applicants should avoid broad and vague descriptions of the research areas.

Q19: For Ph.D programme, is there courses to be taken before I can embark on my thesis and what is the passing mark?

Yes, there are 3 courses. You are required to take 3 special requirement courses as a coursework requirement. These three courses are to be completed within the first year of the programme. A candidate must pass all the special requirement courses before they can proceed to the thesis. Two courses are compulsory and one is elective course. The courses for the Ph.D programme are:

The passing marks are as follows:

• Obtain at least 70% marks as stated in the Postgraduate Grading System.

• The marks obtained will not be computed in the CGPA of the students.

• The credit hours of the special requirement courses are computed in the student’s academic workload.

• The course cannot be registered as Audit since it has a final examination.

• A student is allowed to repeat a course only once. In the event of a failure, he/she fails in the second attempt, he/she will be dismissed from the programme.

Q22: When are classes conducted?

All postgraduate classes are conducted in the evening during weekdays (Monday to Fridays), from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm. However, some classes may be held on Saturdays.

Q24: Is it possible to do the course work online?

Currently, we do not have facilities for online courses.

Q25: What is the grading system at International Islamic University Malaysia?

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for graduation must be 3.00 and above.

Q26: For master and postgraduate diploma programme, what are the pre-requisite courses, why I have been assigned these courses and what is the passing marks?

Our programme is multidisciplinary in nature. This means that it covers three main disciplined aspects, i.e. economics, law and Shari’ah. In addition, students joining IIiBF come from different backgrounds and as such are required to have a strong foundation before proceeding to the master programme. The number of pre-requisite courses will be determined based on the academic background of the applicants.

Q27: How much are the tuition fees and other related costs?

Tuition fees for Malaysian students are different from international students. Interested students are advised to consider costs of accommodation, study materials and other living expenses prior to applying. Yes. However, please contact the Centre for Postgraduate Studies for futher details and confirmation.

Q32: What accommodation facilities does the University offer?

Currently there are limited accommodation facilities for post-graduate students.

Most post-graduate students live off campus. Students with family and spouses will be given assistance in allocating suitable places of residence off-campus.

However, post-graduate students who opts to live on campus, will be given accommodation at our Main Campus, Jalan Gombak, Kuala Lumpur.
