Programme Description
PROGRAMME AND MODE OF STRUCTURE
Candidates for Ph.D in Islamic Banking and Finance are required to take 3 special requirement courses as a coursework requirement. These three courses are to be completed within the first year of the programme. Candidates must pass all the special requirement courses before they can proceed to the thesis.
Two courses are compulsory and one is elective course. The courses for the Ph.D programme are:

Ph.D THESIS
Once the candidates have completed their courses, they need to prepare their thesis proposals to be defended and approved by the thesis committee. Members of the dissertation committee will be appointed by the Postgraduate Committee. The objective of the thesis committee is to effectively supervise individual candidates during the research period. Once the proposal has been approved, the candidate will continue with their thesis until the thesis is completed. The thesis will be examined by the internal and external examiners. The dissertations will finally be required be defended at the viva voce.
Following the viva voce, one of the following recommendations will be made:
- Pass
- Pass with minor revisions to be completed in six (6) months
- Pass with major revisions to be completed within the minimum period of six (6) to maximum period of twelve (12) months
- Resubmission with viva to be completed within the minimum period of twelve (12) to maximum period of eighteen (18) months

Entry Requirements
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- A relevant Bachelor's degree with good grades from an accredited institutions of higher learning or any other certificates recognised to be equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and with relevant professional ecperience AND:
- A relevant Master's degree with good grades from an accredited institution of higher learning.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the Institute's requirements, an applicant must produce satisfactory proof of proficiency of English Language by:
Thesis written in English language
- The Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550 of
- The International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) with a score of 6.0 or
- The IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT) with a minimum score 6.0
Thesis written in Arabic language
- The Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550 or
- The International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) with a score of 5.0 or
- The IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT) with a minimum score 5.0.
