M.HSc. (Teaching English as a Second Language)

The Master of Human Science in Teaching English as a Second Language programme introduces students to the different approaches in teaching English as a Second Language, allowing them to have a better understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of the English Language. This will help them to be better teachers of the language, understanding and responding critically and correctly to students' needs in learning the language in classrooms.

The programme basically requires two years of full time study or four years on a part time basis. Students in this programme are engaged in in-depth study of English linguistics and in research and fieldwork in the area of teaching English as a second language.

Entry Requirements

  1. A relevant Bachelor’s degree with good grade from IIUM or any other accredited institutions of higher learning, or other certificates that are recognized as equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree or relevant professional qualifications and experience that are recognized by the Senate of the University.
  2. Applicants are required to obtain the following English proficiency level:

IELTS - Band 7

Note: Students are required to provide evidence of English proficiency by submitting their proficiency certificates before the beginning of the programme. If they fail to do so, they will be required to sit for the IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT).
