Bachelor of Human Sciences in English Language and Literature

This undergraduate programme normally requires four years of full time study. Students in this programme are engaged in in-depth study of the linguistic and literary aspects of the English language.

The programme helps students to have solid foundations in the areas of English Language, particularly Literature and Linguistics, hoping to develop and nurture in students an appreciation of the English Language and the ability to think critically about the daily use of English in all spheres of life. Specifically, it prepares students for a life in demanding professions such as teaching, editing, translating and in the areas of consultancy, services, commerce and the media. In line with the university’s mission of Islamicisation of knowledge, the courses are taught with special attention to Islamic perspectives. This well-rounded curriculum allows students and staff to explore their strengths and weaknesses in applying English to their life with Islam at the core of their outlook of life.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements are according to the following tracks:

TRACK 1

A pass in the Higher School Certificate (STPM) with a CGPA of 3.00 or at least:

  • A C Grade with a 2.0 point in the General Paper
  • A C Grade with a 2.0 point in any two other subjects

                            AND

A pass in the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) or its equivalent with at least:

  • A credit in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia
  • A credit in Pendidikan Islam/Tassawur Islam/Pengajian Qur’an dan Sunnah/Pendidikan Syariah Islamiah
  • A B grade in English Language
  • A credit in Mathematics
  • A credit in any two other subjects

 

TRACK 2                      

A Diploma or its equivalent with a CGPA of 3.00, provided that it is approved by the Malaysian Government and endorsed by the University Senate

                            AND

A pass in the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) or its equivalent with at least:

  • A credit in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia
  • A credit in Pendidikan Islam/Tassawur Islam/Pengajian Qur’an dan Sunnah/Pendidikan Syariah Islamiah
  • A B grade in English Language
  • A credit in Mathematics
  • A credit in any two other subjects

 

TRACK 3

A pass in the relevant Centre for Foundation Studies programme with a minimum CGPA of 2.25.

 

TRACK 4

A pass in the Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) with at least a Jayyid Jiddan grade.

                           AND

A pass in the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) or its equivalent with at least:

  • A credit in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia
  • A credit in Pendidikan Islam/Tassawur Islam/Pengajian Qur’an dan Sunnah/Pendidikan Syariah Islamiah
  • A B grade in English Language
  • A credit in Mathematics
  • A credit in any two other subjects

 

In all the tracks above, a minimum of Band 3 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) is required.

 

TRACK 5

A pass in overseas qualifications deemed by the Senate to be equivalent to GCSE A Level with good grades.
