Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours)

 

The proposal to transfer the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) program from Kulliyyah of Science to Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences was discussed during the plan to establish the Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences (263rd Senate Meeting, 25th January 2002; 265th Senate Meeting, 29th March 2002). In subsequent discussions after the establishment of Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences, it was agreed that the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) program would continue to be under Kulliyyah of Science until Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences was fully developed and in position to run the program well. Finally during Semester 1, Session 2011/2012, the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) was transferred and commenced at Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences.

This is a full-time undergraduate program. Students will be awarded a degree in Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) after completing 140 credit-hours of course works. The duration of studieswill be a minimum of eight (8) semesters which is equivalent to four (4) years (normal duration) and a maximum of twelve (12) semesters which is equivalent to six (6) years (normal duration). The mode of offering of all courses will include lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, seminars, presentations, problem-based learning, case studies, industrial training, and co-curriculum.
 
The program is in line with the Malaysian 5-years plan in building human resource and to increase the number of scientists in Malaysia. The degree will adequately prepare the students should they want to further their studies at higher levels, in line with the National Higher Eduation Strategic Plan to produce 50% scientists and researcher for each 10,000 workers.

Career Opportunities.

Investigation and diagnosis of the diseases, health management, medical therapy procedure production, and analysis on the effect of pollution to human depend so much on the laboratory tests and investigations. Hence the modern society needs competent and skilled biomedical scientists who can think critically to solve some health-related problems. With the increase in the nation manpower needs in public and private sectors, this Biomedical Science graduates are expected to be employed as researcher or scientist, science officer, research officer, underwriter, and academic staff, respectively at the government hospitals, public health laboratory, private pathology laboratory, public research institutions, health-related industry as well as at the public or private higher education institutes.

Entry Requirements

 
Minimum CGPA Requirements into Undergraduate Programmes (Ex-Centre for Foundation Studies Students)
  • A pass in the IIUM Matriculation Centre's final examination with a CGPA of not less than 2.50 

 

The general academic requirements for admission into undergraduate degree programmes of IIUM (General Requirements for Malaysians)
  • A Pass at the SPM level or equivalent with at least
  • A Credit in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Malaysia or equivalent A Credit in “Pendidikan Islam” / “Tasawwur Islam” / ”Pendidikan Al-Qur’an & As-Sunnah” / ”Pendidikan Syariah Islamiah” at the SPM level or equivalent; A Credit in any three (3) subjects in SPM/equivalent.

AND

  • A Diploma or any other Equivalent Qualification with a CGPA 3.00 recognized by the Government of Malaysia and approved by the Senate of the University

OR

  • A Pass at the STAM examination with at least Jayyid Jiddan:

OR

  • A Pass at the STPM examination with a CGPA of 3.00 or at least:
  • Grade C [Subject Grade Point (SGP)] of 2.00 in the General Paper; Grade C [Subject Grade Point (SGP)] of 2.00 in two [2] of other subject taken.

AND

  • Obtained a required Band in the “Malaysian University English Test” (MUET) as specify by each programmes.

The general academic requirements for admission into undergraduate degree programmes of IIUM (International Qualifications)
  • At least three (3) principal passes in the General Certificate of Education ‘Advanced Level’ (GCE) ‘A’ Level Examination (UK Educational System) obtained in one sitting;

OR

  • International Baccalaureate (IB) with a minimum of six (6) subjects obtained in one sitting;

OR

  • Any other qualifications that are recognized by the Senate of the University as equivalent to the above

 

Language Requirements

Depending on the programme of study, instruction at IIUM is carried in English and/or Arabic. Applicants wishing to pursue studies in programmes taught in English must obtain:

  • A score of 550 in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 
  • 6.0 points in the test administrated by the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS)
  • If they do not have either of these qualifications, applicants may sit for the IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT), in which they must obtain at least 6.0 points to fulfill the requirement.
  • Applicants interested in programmes taught in Arabic must obtain an exemption after sitting for the IIUM-administered Arabic Placement Test (APT).

Applicants who are unable to submit satisfactory results in any of the tests above may take up language proficiency courses at the university to fulfill the admission requirements.

 

Other Requirements

If deemed necessary, applicants may also be required to attend an interview and/or take an entrance test conducted by the Board of Admissions. Applicants should note that normally there are more applications than places available at the University. The fulfillment of the minimum entrance requirements alone does not guarantee admission into the University.
