Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science offers a Ph. D. program based on a research to suit the needs of students with a variety of academic backgrounds. Students will be armed with a strong foundation for research to prepare the student to conduct a meaningful , original and extensive research project. This program is available in part time and full time basis.

Programme Description
 
 The student is required to submit his/her research proposal which need to be defended at the end of the first semester. Upon approval by the Supervisory Committee, the student will continue with his/her research.
 
The final thesis need to be submitted at the end of the study period. There will be at least two examiners to evaluate the final thesis, one of whom must be from another institution. The appointment of all examiners shall be recommended by the Kulliyyah Post Graduate Committee (KPGC) and endorsed by the University's Senate. An oral defense of the thesis will be arranged once agreed by the examiners.
 
Thesis
 
A Doctoral's thesis is an important scholarly achievement which must maintain certain standard. The thesis should contain work of merit to be presented in satisfactory literary form (including references, notes and bibliography, as appropriate), should not be of unnecessary length and should provide evidence of training in and application of research methods appropriate to the particular field of study.
 
The thesis must show the originality of work. Students may not select an area of research for which a degree has already been conferred in IIUM or any other University. However they may incorporate any part of such work provided that the part of the work which has been so incorporated is clearly indicated in their thesis. Plagiarism is considered to be a serious offence.
 
In line with the vision and mission of the University, it is highly recommended that the thesis should reflect to some extent an attempt to incorporate some Islamic perspectives on issues explored.

Entry Requirements

Admission Requirements

 

  1. A good Master’s degree with CGPA of 3.00 or equivalent, in a discipline related to Information Technology or Computer Science from an institution recognized by the Senate; or
  2. On recommendation by the Department of Computer Science Postgraduate Committee, applicants who have a slightly lower qualification than item (1) but with working experience in an Information Technology or Computer Science-related industry can also be considered.

 

Language Proficiency

 

  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 551 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (Internet-based); or
  2. International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a minimum overall band score of 6.0; or
  3. Applicants who are unable to present the required scores in TOEFL or IELTS are allowed to sit for IIUM-administered test (EPT). A minimum overall band score of 6.0 is required to be considered for admission.
