Community Medicine

Public health focus of preventive medicine and health promotion. It deals with subtopics of epidemiology, biostatistics, family health, occupational health, environmental health, health management and health promotion. Undergraduates are exposed to the principles of public health medicines, basically the fundamentals of epidemiology and biostatistics in year 1 and its application in health services to the community and Clinical Epidemiology in year 4.

Once students entered their year 4, they will be exposed to the various health services programs run by units under Ministry of Health Malaysia, such as Communicable Disease Control, Non Communicable Disease, Environmental Health, Occupational Health, International Health and Primary Care centres. They will visit rural areas in Jerantut, Pahang and observe how health services are being provided to the people in remote area.

Students will also be exposed to conducting community research. They will learn the complete process of doing a research from prioritizing research topic, planning for data collection, data collection proper, data analysis, presentation of research finding and executing the intervention programme in the community. In addition, they will be also exposed to Evidence Based Medicine where they will learn how to appraise medical articles.

We offer the following courses:

MED 1407: Introduction to Public Health

This course is offered to all MBBS Year 1 students in the last block(block 4) in Phase 1. The main objective is to introduce public health medicine to medical students. The main components of this course are Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Students are also introduced to Family Health, Nutritional Health, Demography, Occupational Health and Environmental Health. The modes of instruction include lecture, practical and mini research projects. Students will be assigned in small groups and will have to design and execute one small research. Students are expected to present their findings in the last week of their posting.

MED 4106: Public Health

This is a continuation from MED1407. Basic knowledge gathered in Year 1 will be further  enhanced here. They will also visit health facilities in the Ministry of Health. Similar to year 1, student will need to conduct a population based research in the designated community.
