3. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

The aim of this program is to offer graduates of different disciplines, who have been engaged in Mechatronics Engineering or related disciplines, an opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge in the field of Mechatronics Engineering. The objectives of the program are as follows:

To provide an opportunity for the students to obtain specialized knowledge in different areas of Mechatronics Engineering.

To provide an opportunity for national and international graduates to pursue a Master degree in Mechatronics Engineering and understand the importance of ethics in their profession.

To provide an opportunity to national and international students to perform research and development in new and technologically challenging selected areas.

To enhance the educational standards of the Kulliyyah of Engineering as well as IIUM among other world class universities through continuous learning process and advanced research.

 

4. OVERALL OUTCOMES

The educational outcomes of this program are as follows:

To have in-depth understanding, broad analytical thinking and technical competency in advanced engineering field.

To possess the ability to predict and explain the results of different experiments, simulations, and analysis as well as to draw meaningful conclusions.

To possess the ability to communicate skillful in presenting technical information in public seminar, conferences, symposium, workshop, etc.

To possess the ability to write scientific proposal for research funding and scholarship.

To have high skills in writing technical and scientific findings in form of dissertations, reports and / or referred journals.

To possess the ability to function efficiently and effectively both as individual and in a group as well as being a strong team leader in both National / International engineering enterprise.

To posses the ability to acquire engineering and management skills with high moral and ethical values to produce well rounded postgraduates suitable for modern industry.

To possess the ability to behave ethically in scientific related matters such as maintain ethical codes in research including getting permission from and giving proper credits to others.

The learning outcomes address the contemporary research areas and technologies pertaining to Mechatronics engineering that affects the techno-economic status of Malaysia and the world. Furthermore, extensive theoretical and laboratory research work allow the students to function effectively as an individual and in a group with the capacity to be a leader or manager as well as an effective team member.

5.2. Curriculum
The proposed curriculum has been designed keeping in view the future needs of Malaysia, in particular, and other countries in the world. The program has been developed to meet the needs of those employed in various Mechatronics Engineering related professions wishing to expand their expertise in various sub-disciplines. Thesis research allows students to plan the greater part of the taught element of the program to suit their individual background and future career development. The courses offered cover various Mechatronics Engineering related disciplines and are listed in Table 1 (Core courses) and Table 2 (Elective courses).

The master program is available in two modes namely
i) Master by research and
ii) Master by course and research (mixed mode)

 

5.2.1 Master by Research

Students registered for this mode are required to successfully complete a course from the Kulliyyah of Islamic revealed Knowledge and Human Scence in accordance with the university requirement. In addition they must register the Seminar Course at least for one semester where they are required to attend the seminar programme of the department and deliver one seminar on a topic selected by them and approved by their supervisor. The seminar is a graduation requirement.

5.2.2 Master by Course and Research (Mixed Mode)

For mixed mode, students are required to successfully complete 20 credit hours of coursework and 20 credit hours of thesis. Out of the 20 credit hours, 11 credit hours are consisting of four core courses. Of the 11 credit-hour course work, a course from the Kulliyyah of Islamic revealed Knowledge and Human Scence (GEN 6000) is required in accordance with the university requirement. The rest 9 credit hours are elective courses that are offered under two specializations. List of the core course are shown in Table 2.

II. Elective Courses

The elective courses based on specialization are divided into two streams, namely Control and Instrumentation, and Robotics and Automation. A student needs to take at least two of the elective courses from his selected stream, the third elective course he can choose from the list of courses from either of the stream or list of postgraduate courses in Kulliyyah of Engineering.

Research Methodology in Mechatronics Engineering

Research Methodology in Mechatronics Engineering is a compulsory 2 credit-hour course and all students must take it at the beginning of the program.

 

Thesis

Thesis is the partial fulfilment requirement for the mixed mode masters program Thesis accounts 20 credit hours of the master program.

 

5.3. Assessment and Examinations

The system of education employed by the University encourages interaction between lecturers and students and requires active participation from students. This provides an environment conducive to continuous assessment to take place and for students to get continuous feedback on their performance throughout the semester. Grades obtained in the form of continuous assessment, therefore, do not just reflect their performance in the final examination but are based on a number of assignments, seminars, projects, quizzes and tests conducted throughout the semester.

6. ADMISSION CRITERIA/REQUIREMENTS

Master Programmes

The master programmes are available in two modes namely (i) master by research and (ii) master by course and research (mixed mode).

Master by Research
In master by research programme candidates should possess a relevant bachelor degree with a very good academic record (with a minimum CGPA of 3.0/4.0) or its equivalent from any institution of higher learning recognized by the IIUM Senate.

Master by Course and Research
In master by course and research programme candidates should possess a relevant bachelor degree with good grades from any institution of higher learning recognized by the IIUM Senate, or any other certificate that is recognized as equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and relevant professional experience recognized by the IIUM Senate.

Language

Applicants must present a score of 550 in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 6.0 points in the test administered by the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS). Alternatively, they may sit for the IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT) and obtain a minimum of 6.0 points to fulfill the English language requirement. Applicants who are unable to submit satisfactory results in any of the above test may take up language proficiency courses at the University to fulfill the admission requirements.
