Department Highlights
Basic Clinical Skills Centre (CSC)
The CSC is located on the 3rd Floor of the Jalan Hospital Campus. The clinical skills centre was officially launched on 5th July 2006 by YB Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Tahir Azhar. This basic clinical skills centre is a comprehensive laboratory to cater to medical and nursing students. The centre consists of:
- Office area (including reception area and resource area)
- Discussion room for anaesthesiology posting and department meeting room
- Workshop area for CPR courses, defibrillation and airway management
- Storage and maintenance room

- Respiratory
- Cardiovascular
- Gastrointestinal
- Genitourinary tract
- Reproductive
- Musculoskeletal
- CNS
- Post natal care
Advance Clinical Skills Centre (ACSC)
The installation of the ACSC was completed in September 2006 at the 1st level of the Kulliyyah of Medicine at the Indera Mahkota Campus. Its instructors were trained at the METI Training Centre in Sarasota, Florida in January 2007 for 5 days. Two of the academic staff had also attended the Anaesthesia Crisis Resource Management (ACRM) Course at Skills Development Centre, Queensland Health, Brisbane, Australia.
The technology in the ACSC is from METI, USA and this centre has a reception area, discussion room, complete audio visual facilities, a room for a Human Patient Simulator (HPS), a room for a Emergency Care Simulator, and another room for a Baby Simulator (Baby Sim). The department had successfully organized the first Malaysian Human patient Simulator Network Conference in October 2007.
MED 4602
During the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care is one of the five disciplines of Specialised Posting. Medical students in Year 4 are rotated to Anaesthesiology for two weeks. Students are introduced to the management of patients undergoing general and regional anaesthesia, intensive care and pain management. During the course, students will also acquire knowledge and skills in basic and airway management and resuscitation. We have introduced emergency management in anaesthesia and intensive care with interactive sessions by means of high fidelity Human Patient Simulators at the Advance Clinical Skill Centre.
MED 4602 Course Objectives:
1. Enable students acquire basic knowledge in the principles and practice of safe anaesthesia.
2. Enable students acquire basic knowledge and skills in post-operative pain management and airway management.
3. Acquire basic knowledge and some skills in intensive care medicine
Other academic activities:
- Basic Medical Science Lectures
- IRK lectures for Year 4 Medical students and Year 3 Pharmacy students
- Kulliyyah of Nursing: Year 2 and Year 4 Lectures on Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
- Scientific Meeting on Update and Practical Approaches in Upper Airway management (organized with ORL-HNS, IIUM)
- Acute Pain Service workshop for nurses and paramedic at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan
- CSC lecturers participate in the Anaesthesiology department’s Continuous Medical Education at HTAA every week, as well as the weekly CPC at the Kulliyyah of Medicine.

- National Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care Courses (BASIC) around Malaysia
- Malaysian Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the HTAA
