The Department of Surgery IIUM has always played a prominent role since the birth of the medical faculty, especially in undergraduate programmes, as it is one of the core subjects in the medical curriculum. Our fundamental mission is excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research.
Currently, the Department of Surgery has 6 members participating in teaching, research and clinical activities at IIUM and its major affiliated hospital, Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan. 4 members are doing sub-specialty training in local and overseas institutions, and 4 lecturers are in training. The Department also has one visiting professor from overseas.
International Islamic University Malaysia Endoscopic Unit at the Ground Floor of the JHC has been in service since January 2006. The facilities available are the OGDS, Colonoscopy and ERCP. The facilities and the staff which are available in this unit allow the performance of several diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. There are two procedures done here: upper endoscopic procedures include diagnostic endoscopy with or without biopsy; and colonoscopic procedures including colorectal cancer screening, biopsy and polypectomy.
Gastrointestinal (GI) Lab
The GI Lab under the Department of Surgery is located on the 3rd Floor of the IIUM Jalan Hospital Campus. This state-of-the-art gastrointestinal laboratory offers services including consultation, endoscopic procedures, 24-hour pH studies, esophageal and anal manometry, biofeedback treatment and EUS.
Urology Laboratory (UroLab)
The UroLab of the Department of Surgery is located at the Ground Floor of the IIUM Jalan Hospital Campus. The Advanced Urodynamic System Machine and Urodynamic Measuring System is placed here. This laboratory provides diagnostic procedures including urodynamic study, uroflowmetry, TRUS biopsy of the prostate, and ultrasound for post-void residual urine volume.
