Expert Profile


Norwina is currently a Senior Academic Fellow at the Department of Architecture, Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED). She was the first appointed as Associate Professor and Head of Department for Architecture programme in 1998. She have held the post of Deputy Dean Student Affairs for KAED and as academic advisors for undergraduate and postgraduate programme of Architecture. Currently, she is heading the Islamic Architectural Heritage Research Group (ISArcH), set up in June 2013, as the coordinator to spearhead the niche area of KAED in Islamic architecture. Her experiences include working as public works architect in the Public Works Department (PWD/JKR) for 29 years i.e. from 1979-2008 in the Medical and Health Works Branch; as a member of the Core Team for the Asian Development Bank Loan projects at the Ministry of Health Malaysia; and as a secondment officer in the setting up of the IIUM architecture programme until full accreditation from 1998 to 2008. She joined IIUM upon optional retirement from the government as IIUM contract teaching staff.
As a professional architect and interior designer registered with the Board of Architects Malaysia, Norwina is among Board of Architects Malaysia Accreditation and Validation panel for both Architecture and Interior Designers professional programme. Norwina was a Council Member of PAM from 2000-2003. She is currently a Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Architects or Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM); and had represent PAM as Co-Chair for Social Responsibility Committee from 2019-2022; Institutional Member of the Union of International Architect-Public Health Group Work Programme (UIA-PHG) as well as Architecture for All work programme from Region IV; and member of Committee for Social Responsibility for the Asian Council of Architects (ARCASIA). She is also a member of the Global University Public Health Architecture (GUPHA) and an expert member of the Industrialised Building System (IBS) of the Malaysian Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) since 2000.  In keeping with her professional practices, she continues her consultancy work as a health facility planner and architect to the industry. In PAM she is also the advisor or subject expert to the team for healthcare in the development of the Built Environment Guidelines for Pandemic and Emergency Architect training establishment. Her job experience includes monitoring the IIUM Teaching Hospital construction together with Unit Kerjasama Awam dan Swasta (UKAS) of the Prime Minister's Dept from 2009 to 2016 through IIUM Specialist Centre and as advisor to Leon Architect for MAHSA Teaching Hospital. With interest in architectural heritage, she is also an active member in the International Council of Monument and Sites (ICOMOS) Malaysian Chapter.
