Expert Profile


Dr. Syed Musa Syed Jaafar Alhabshi currently serves as Dean of IIiBF, IIUM and has held various academic positions since February 1994 including Head of Accounting Department (IIUM,1994), Head of Postgraduate Islamic Banking and Finance (IIUM, 1998), Head of Center of Post Graduate Studies (Unitar, 2000), Dean of Faculty of Business Administration (Unitar, 2004), Dean of Graduate School of Business ( Unirazak,2010) and Dean of Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIUM, 2013). As an academic he has served both public and private universities since 1989 a close to 30 years period of teaching, research and supervision of post graduate students in Accounting, Business Administration and Islamic Banking and Finance in both taught master programmes (M.Sc. Accounting, MBA/MOM, MSc Islamic Banking and Finance), professional (CIMA, CIFP) and Doctoral programmes (PhD Accounting, Management and Islamic Banking and Finance). As an academic and trainer he conducted numerous local and international workshops on accounting, audit, governance and risk in Islamic Finance organized by both financial authorities and agencies such as IFSB, SEACEN to regulators, academics and practitioners in the UK, Dubai, Hong Kong, Maldives, Jeddah, Singapore, Brunei, Jakarta and Philippines.   Education Background His early education began in Raffles Institution Singapore (1976) and later obtained Diploma in Business (Financial) from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore (1984). Whist attached to audit firm in Singapore, he pursued ACCA qualification and graduated with  1st class Honors in 1989 in Bachelor of Business Administration at International Islamic University, Malaysia. With IIUM scholarship award he pursued MSc in Finance and was awarded Doctorate of Business Administration (Accounting and Finance) (1994) in Strathclyde University, UK. Academic and Professional Appointments Upon completion of his A level exams, he was enlisted in National Service as Police Inspector Singapore Police Force from 1980 to 1982. Having completed Diploma he was employed by Coopers and Lybrand, Singapore (1984). In 1989 he was invited to be academic staff of Kulliyyah of Economics and Management, IIUM, Malaysia and served for 15 years. In 2000 he continued his academic career in UNITAR where e-learning hybrid model was employed. He then pioneered the PhD Management offshore program with Univerisiti Muslim Indonesia in Makassar 2003. Due to increasing consulting and industry training responsibilities he took full industrial attachment to facilitate the setting up of Amanie Business Solutions (Amanie) and International Institute of Islamic Finance Inc (IIF Inc) in 2005 which then followed as a full time Principal Consultant for both establishments until 2008. During which he was among leading team member(s) for Khazanah Islamic financial hub consulting project in SJER (Iskandar), INCIEF CIFP Professional Modules development as well as design and development of CIMA UK Certified Islamic Finance Professional Certificate and Diploma program (2007). In 2009 he resumed his full time academic path as Associate Professor in Graduate School of Business in Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (Unirazak) where he taught Global MBA in Islamic Banking and Finance Programme involving dual Master award from a consortium of several universities (UK, US, Germany, Spain) and supervise PhD in Management. In 2000 IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIiBF) recruited him as faculty staff of IIiBF and has since taught courses and supervise research related to graduate Islamic banking and finance programs. In 2013 he was appointed as member of External Review Team of the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the United Arab Emirates and reappointed in 2019 where he reviewed programs on Islamic Banking and Finance offered in UAE. Currently he is a panel assessor of Financial Accreditation Agency (FAA) and external examiner to University of Nottingham graduate and undergraduate program in Islamic Investment and Finance. Since 2016 he is appointed as Group member for Infusion of Shariah Standard Murabaha into Academic Syllabus of Local universities. Since 2018 he is appointed as a Chairman of Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) Mumalah Islamic Finance Program Standard review committee as well as member of Majlis Jawatan Akreditasi (Sains Sosial). In 2015 he is appointed as Director for Entry Point Project 7  (EPP 7) on Islamic Finance Education from National Economic Transformation Plan (ETP). Recently in 2017 he has been elected as President of International Council of Islamic Finance Educators (ICIFE) to spearhead talent and curriculum developments of Islamic financial Services Industry. Currently he is also the Chairman of International Shariah Advisory Services (ISAS) a subsidiary of IIUM holdings. In 2017 he was elected as President of International council for Islamic Finance Education (ICIFE) and since March 2019 he is re-elected as president for the second term. Professional Engagement and Industry Accomplishments His consultancy and professional engagements began when he was appointed as a member Accounting and Auditing Standards Board (AAOIFI), Bahrain in 1997 as well as serving Malaysian Accounting Standards Board Working Groups since 2001. He served as Islamic product consultant to EON Banking Group (Eon Cap Islamic) as well as member of Shariah committee. Currently he serves as Shariah Advisory Committee (SAC) member of Securities Commission, Shariah committee member of Bank of Tokyo and MNRB Group as well as Shariah Supervisory committee (SSC) Labuan Offshore Financial Services Authority (LOFSA). He was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director (INED) to serve the board of Takaful Ikhlas Berhad and Malaysian Retakaful Berhad from 2008 to 2017. He was also appointed as Technical consultant of Centennial Group to draft Islamic Financial Services Board Transparency and Market Discipline Standard and as well as Prudential Structural Indicators for Islamic Financial Services Industry (IFSI). Subsequently he was engaged to conduct research on Shariah Boards and Supervision (1999) to facilitate preparation of draft for Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) Shariah governance standard. Subsequently as Amanie Team member, he was engaged  by BNM on SIX shariah contract parameters for Islamic financial services prior to the promulgation of the current Shariah Standards.
