Objectives

The objectives of the Industrial Training are:

To provide exposure to students to specific practices related to Biotechnology, Biomedical and Computational and Theoretical Sciences (CTS) in private or public sectors.

To provide exposure to students to become responsible researchers related to their field of interest

To acquire skills and related techniques in science and mathematics which include daily interaction with the working staffs and report writing.

Requirement

Industrial Training is a compulsory programme for all students in the Biotechnology and Biomedical Departments, Kulliyyah of Science. However, although it is optional for students in the CTS department, students who do not participate in Industrial Training are required to carry out a project within the department.

Duration

The duration of the training shall be twelve (12) weeks in Semester III after completing the third year programmes for students from Biotechnology, Biomedical and CTS Departments.

Trainees Responsibility

In this training programme, when the student is accepted by the public or private agency, the student is obliged to adhere to the rules and regulations of the organisation. This includes matters related to leave approval and time-off approvals. During industrial training, the student is supervised by the external supervisor at the particular organization and the student is not required to report to the supervisor at the university, unless when the need arises for coordination.

To avoid any transmission or release of vital information (that belongs to the organisation) during and after the industrial training, the student is strongly advised to sign a secrecy agreement with the attached organization. Such an agreement is normally provided by the agency that provides the training. In cases, where such an agreement is not in place by the accepting agency, the Industrial Training office at Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM, shall provide such an agreement to protect the interest of the obliging agency in providing the training. The student is strongly advised to log in all research and other activities carried out during the training programme in a Log Book. This Log Book serves as a daily record for all tasks performed and observations made during the training which can be verified by the external supervisor as and when the need arises.

Upon completion of the training, an evaluation report relating to the student’s performance during the training is assessed by the external supervisor at the presiding agency. The evaluation report is formatted by Industrial Training Office, Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM, and it relates to the student’s Discipline, Punctuality, Interest, Participation, Leadership, General knowledge, Skill development and Interaction (with Staff) where the student was provided the training.
