Early 2002, concern were raised about student academic performance in IIUM, and following a series of meetings, a steering committee was established to propose solutions for the problem. One of these was to establish a task force to conduct motivational and study skills programmes.

A total of four camps were conducted from December 2002 and a mentoring programme was also introduced. Then in February 2004, SLEU was formally established with its own staff and premises on the Ground Floor of the Student Centre Building.

SLEU continues to implement the original objectives of enhancing student learning and has organized additional programmes designed to achieve this, including revision of the camp structure, peer tutoring, various workshops and forums.
