OVERVIEW
The Department of Architecture and Environmental Design is one of the science-based departments in the Centre for Foundation Studies, IIUM. The department was established in May 1997.
This department functions as a preparatory platform to provide the introductory knowledge and fundamental skills in the field of architecture and environmental design. The students who have completed their programme may join the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED) at Gombak campus for their undergraduate studies. The curriculum structure of architecture and environmental design programme is designed to suit the specific needs of the Kulliyyah.
OBJECTIVES
- To offer architecture and environmental design courses for students of architecture and environmental design programme.
- To provide the students with the fundamental architecture and environmental design knowledge and skills which are required by undergraduate studies at Kulliyyah level.
- To introduce the Islamization of human knowledge in architecture and environmental design programme.
COURSE SYLLABUS
The department offers eight (8) courses:
- AED0613 Introduction to Mathematics for Built Environment
This course will cover the following topics; Algebraic processing skills I and II, trigonometry, geometry, calculus and introduction to mechanics.
- AED0623 Introduction to Statistics for Built Environment
This course will cover the following topics; Basic concepts, variables and measurements, population and sampling procedures, summarizing qualitative data, summarizing quantitative data, measures of central tendency, measures of variability/dispersion, the normal curve and correlation.
- AED0633 Introduction to Economics for Built Environment
This course will cover the following topics; Introduction to economics, types of economic systems, the market mechanism/price system, market elasticity, utility analysis, production, market structures, money and banking and public finance.
- AED0644 Introduction to Built Environment
This course is fundamental in exposing the students to the scope and studies of built environments, which will be the initial foundation of their understanding of the field. This course covers topics on introduction to built environment, principles of ecology and ecosystem, environmental management and issues, introduction to urban and regional planning, introduction to architecture, introduction to interior architecture, introduction to landscape architecture, introduction to conservation, introduction to industrial design, introduction to quantity surveying, introduction to other professions in construction industry and appreciation to construction materials.
- AED0654 Presentation Skills
The course is designed to provide students with the fundamentals of academic presentation skills, formally and informally in multitudes of settings. This course will cover topics on academic presentation, method of delivery and etiquettes, informative and persuasive presentations, presentation aids, e-presentations and delivering presentation.
- AED0664 Freehand Drawing
This course is to introduce the basics of freehand graphic skills that are commonly use to clarify and communicate ideas relating to objects, structure, and spatial organization. This course will explore the principal language of expression of visual thoughts and perceptions in built environment. Students will focus on the basic aspect of freehand descriptive sketching techniques such as line, shape, rendering, colour, tonal value, and texture.
- AED0616 Graphic Communication
This course is fundamental in exposing the students to the range of graphic tools, techniques and conventions to communicate ideas which will be the initial foundation for their graphic skills and knowledge. This course covers on types of drawing system (orthographic drawings, paraline drawings, and perspective drawings), shade and shadows, graphic composition and presentation drawing.
- AED0626 Introduction to Design
This course is to introduce the basics of design languages and processes in built environment practices. The course will highlight the fundamental topics related to design such as design concept and process, elements and principles of design, form and space, and spatial quality. In addition, the course covers skills & strategies that will help students improve their abilities in problem solving and independent learning.
