DEPARTMENT OF QURANIC LANGUAGE (QLD)

OVERVIEW

Department of Qur’anic Language (QLD) is one of the department under CELPAD. It has been established to offer the Qur’anic version of Arabic Language courses to all students of the Centre for Foundation Studies, Gambang Campus. There are 35 academic staff in the department which consists of 33 Malaysians and 2 foreign staff from Sudan and Ethiopia. The QLD accommodates a wide range of students who intend to further their studies in all departments at the CFS. These include those who do not have any knowledge of Arabic as well as those who received their education fully or partly in Arabic.

OBJECTIVES

The general objectives of the Arabic courses are:

• enable students majoring in Arabic courses at the University (BAR, IRK, ARCOM and LAWS (Shariah)) to develop their four essential Arabic language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). These courses aim to help students express their opinions on some familiar sustainability issues such as good health and well- being, quality education and gender equality towards becoming and embodying Insan Sejahtera in their life.
• provide students majoring in non-arabic courses at the University to acquire fundamental Arabic language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Through this course, students are also equipped with Islamic values and practices imbued with Iman, Taqwa, Amanah and Akhlaq. The course aims to help students express their opinions on some familiar sustainability issues such as good health and well- being, quality education and gender equality towards becoming and embodying Insan Sejahtera in their life.

COURSE OFFERED

The Arabic language courses offered in QLD are mainly divided into courses for English Medium Programmes and Arabic Medium Programmes. Generally, the courses adopt an integrated, blended learning approach that incorporates various language activities combining four essential language skills.  Through these courses, students are equipped with Islamic values and practices imbued with Iman, Taqwa, Amanah and Akhlaq. The IIUM Sejahtera Academic Framework (SAF) elements are also incorporated through class activities.

In year 2021, QLD offered a new curriculum which intrinsically links the elements in the Sejahtera Academic Framework of the university. The new curriculum also provides ample opportunities for students to strengthen their language skills through task-based and collaborative learning which are designed to enable them to develop and apply KHAIR attributes.

Arabic Medium Programmes

• English Medium Programmes

These courses provide students majoring in non-arabic courses at the University to acquire fundamental Arabic language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Through this course, students are also equipped with Islamic values and practices imbued with Iman, Taqwa, Amanah and Akhlaq. The course aims to help students express their opinions on some familiar sustainability issues such as good health and well- being, quality education and gender equality towards becoming and embodying Insan Sejahtera in their life.

Notes: The courses differ in terms of vocabulary complexity as well as coverage of topics in reading texts. The vocabulary used in LQM0813 are very short and simple, picking up familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. While in LQM0823, the course provides simple reading texts on familiar matters which consist of familiar, high frequency vocabulary and job-related language.
