Expert Profile


Ts. Dr. Nurul Hamiruddin Salleh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Selangor. He was a Deputy Dean of Postgraduate, Responsible Research and Innovation, KAED from July 2023 to June 2025. He also was the Head of Department of Architecture from July 2012 until June 2014 and October 2016 until December 2016. Academically, he obtained his Certificate in Architecture from Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) in 1993. Later, Diploma in Architecture and Bachelor in Architecture (Hons) degree in 1996 and 2000 respectively from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor. He was awarded a Master of Arts in Conservation Studies (Historic Buildings and Places) from the University of York, York, the United Kingdom in 2003. Consequently, he pursued his studies and was conferred a Ph.D. in Architecture (Building Conservation) in 2011 from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, Malaysia.  

Professionally, Dr. Nurul Hamiruddin is a Registered Conservator under the Department of National Heritage (JWN) since 2015. He is also a Professional Technologist in Building and Construction Technology with the Malaysian Board of Technologist (MBOT) since March 2019. He also was a council member of ICOMOS Malaysia from 2018 until 2020. He has been involved in various consultancy projects such as the Johor Bahru Urban Forest Project, the Proposed Master Plan for Azlan Malaysia in Perak, the Proposed International Islamic University Afghanistan, the Conservation of Masjid Sultan Alaeddin in Banting, the Relocation and Restoration of Rumah Kutai Perak KAED,IIUM, the Restoration of Rumah Melayu No. 41 Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, and the Preparation of Dilapidation Report and Measured Drawings of Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Kuala Lumpur. 

His research interest includes architecture, heritage building conservation, building fire safety, building construction & technology, and architectural documentation.  Dr. Nurul Hamiruddin is active in publication, research, supervision and consultancy. In the heritage conservation field, he was frequently invited by JWN, Public Works Department of Malaysia (JKR) and the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia as a panel expert or an advisor. Whereby, in architectural education, he is a panel member of accreditation visits for the Council of Architectural Education Malaysia (CAEM), Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM) since 2015.
