Expert Profile


Associate Prof. Dr. Mohamed Elwathig Saeed Mirghani completed his first degree in Agricultural Biochemistry at Cairo University, Egypt then worked as a quality control inspector at the Quality Control Department in Sudan. He completed his MSc in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Gezira. He completed his doctorate in Food Chemistry and Biochemistry with the theoretical and practical combination of using conventional and modern analytical techniques including the advanced instrumental such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy at University Putra Malaysia (UPM) from 1998 till 2002 that period started to do research on Halal and non-Halal detection.
After that, he joined the National Oil-seed Processing and Research Institute (NOPRI) at the University of Gezira, Medani, Sudan, where he directed his research towards the technology of fats and oils in Sudan on conventional and new oil-seed production, analysis and uses. Dr. Mirghani joined the Department of Biotechnology Engineering at the Kulliyyah of Engineering, (KOE) International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), where he conducted research on natural products, biotechnology, and Halal detection on food and non-food products. He joined the Halal research group followed by Halal Research Centre where he was appointed as Deputy Director for Research and Innovation at the International Institute for Halal Research and Training (INHART) from 2011 up to 2016.
Now Dr. Mirghani is part of INHART staff contributing to Halal research, training and consultancy. has many publications on halal authentication, halal detection using various analytical techniques, fats and oils technology, analytical techniques, and biodiesel, and he has published many articles on halal food and non-halal food detection using FTIR spectroscopy and other advanced analytical techniques. Dr Mirghani contributed to Halal training locally regionally and at international level as well. Dr. Mirghani has many collaborations in research at national level with UM, UPM, UKM, and UMS and international research groups in Sudan, Canada, Saudi Arabia and he is a full member of the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS). He received many awards in Halal research and development. Also appointed as Halal consultant in the republic of Sudan.
