Expert Profile
Muhammad Zubir Yusof earned his PhD in occupational hygiene from the University of Aberdeen, U.K. His PhD work involved estimating lifetime pesticide exposure and cognitive impairment under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sean Semple and Prof. Dr. John Cherrie (former Principal Scientist, Institute of Occupational Medicine, UK). In 2015, he received one of the prestigious conference Travel Awards in Nevada, USA, in recognition of his outstanding work and promise in the field of exposure science. He has also presented his work at a wide range of national and international scientific conferences during this time. He returned to Malaysia and took up a lecturer position in the Department of Community Medicine, Kulliyyah of Medicine, in July 2016. He is a registered member of both national and international professional bodies such as the Malaysian Industrial Hygiene Association (MIHA), the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS), the International Society of Exposure Science (ISES), and the Asian Network of Occupational Hygiene (ANOH). The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) in Malaysia appointed him as a consultant for a national project on the role of basic occupational health services in early screening for the identification and prevention of occupational diseases in small and medium-sized industries, and he also served as a principal consultant for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on asbestos health risk assessments. Based on his reputable research experience, the NIOSH assigns him as an expert panel member, providing research consultation. He is also a competent person to conduct chemical health risk assessments in the workplace, as registered with DOSH. Currently, he is an international advisory board member for the Annals of Work Exposure and Health, an official journal for the British Occupational Hygiene Society. His research strategy focused on examining the links between current and past exposure to hazardous agents (i.e., chemical, biological, etc.) and human health.
