Expert Profile


Dr. Syazwani Mohd Zaki is a senior lecturer in materials engineering. She earned her PhD in Materials from the University of Manchester in 2019. Her journey started with a bachelor’s degree from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 2010, followed by a Master’s in Materials Engineering from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2014. Since 2020, she has been a member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) in the UK, where she contributes to their publication, Materials World Magazine.  She currently teaches in the Department of Manufacturing and Materials Engineering at IIUM for the Materials Engineering program. Her research work focuses on advanced hydrogels for solar-driven water purification. Her work focuses on sustainable materials, particularly PVA-chitosan/polyaniline hydrogels. She aims to improve solar vapor generation and tackle global water scarcity. Dr Syazwani has received several awards, including a silver award at the Festival of IDEAS 2025 (IIUM) and gold awards at the Pertandingan Inovasi Alam Melayu 2025, organised by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM). She also won a Gold Award in the Postgraduate Category and a Silver Award in the FYP Category at the Kuliyyah of Engineering Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (KERICE 2025). Her commitment to advancing polymer-based materials and sustainable solutions is evident in her participation in international conferences and academic publications. Dr Syazwani has filed a patent for her work with advanced hydrogels for solar vapor generation.
