Expert Profile

I am a linguist and critical discourse analyst researching how language shapes and is shaped by the social world. My research focuses on race and racism, violence against women in politics, campaign rhetoric, refugee narratives, and everyday discourse, examining how language sustains inequalities, resists power, and enables social change.

In 2020, I founded the Critical Discourse Research Group (CDRG) with my postgraduate students to foster a collaborative, ethically grounded research culture. In 2021, in partnership with Universiti Sains Malaysia, CDRG evolved into the Malaysian Discourse Research Group (MDRG). MDRG provides a dynamic, interdisciplinary forum for local and international scholars to engage with urgent social challenges, including racism, xenophobia, and media representation.

I am currently a Visiting Researcher at Lancaster University, UK (until September 2026), investigating the language of violence in genocidal contexts, with a focus on the ongoing genocide against Palestinians. I am also co-editor of the forthcoming volume Race, Religion, Royalty in Malaysia: Discursively Reproduced, Resisted, Renegotiated (Springer Nature). Committed to inclusive education, I strive to ensure scholarship illuminates and empowers, especially marginalized and stateless communities.
