Expert Profile
Dr. Zamzil Amin is an Associate Professor of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), where he also serves as Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre (SASMEC@IIUM). His career in medicine spans more than two decades, marked by a continuous dedication to clinical excellence, academic leadership, and research innovation in the field of otorhinolaryngology.
After graduating in Medicine from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland in 1999, Dr. Zamzil began his medical career with housemanship training at Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah in Terengganu. He subsequently served as a medical officer in anaesthesiology, general surgery, and primary care, experiences that strengthened his clinical foundations and broadened his understanding of patient care across disciplines. In 2003, he pursued specialist training through the Master of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (MMed ORL-HNS) programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia, which he completed in 2007. He began his specialist career at Hospital Selayang before moving into academia, driven by his passion for teaching and research.
Since joining IIUM in 2007, Dr. Zamzil has been instrumental in shaping undergraduate and postgraduate training in otorhinolaryngology. He has combined his academic work with active clinical practice at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan, IIUM Medical Specialist Clinic, Kuantan Specialist Hospital, and district hospitals across Pahang. His subspecialty interest in upper airway disorders, particularly paediatric airway surgery and obstructive sleep apnea, has been nurtured through advanced training in Singapore, Adelaide, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur under leading international experts.
Dr. Zamzil’s research is focused on paediatric airway disorders, sleep apnea, and nasal allergy. He has secured multiple research grants, including national FRGS awards and IIUM endowment funding, and has published more than thirty-five papers in Scopus- and ISI-indexed journals. His work appears in high-impact publications such as The Laryngoscope, JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, Clinical Otolaryngology, Journal of Laryngology and Otology, Sleep and Breathing, and Auris Nasus Larynx. His research has been cited more than 200 times, and his Scopus H-index of 11 reflects his standing in the academic community. He has also shared his expertise through invited lectures and conference presentations at international platforms including the World Congress of Sleep Apnea, the European Laryngological Society, the European Society of Paediatric Otolaryngology, and the Asian Paediatric Otolaryngology Congress.
In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Zamzil has received awards such as Best Paper Presenter at the 4th Asian Paediatric Otolaryngology Congress (2013), the IIUM Quality Research Award in Health and Allied Sciences (2013), and the title of Most Published Author in Medicine at IIUM (2017). He has further contributed to the profession by directing the Kuantan Paediatric Airway Workshop series, which has drawn participants from across the region.
Beyond his research and teaching, Dr. Zamzil is active in academic publishing and editorial work. He has served as a reviewer for journals including The Laryngoscope, Annals of Saudi Medicine, Neurology India, Medical Journal of Malaysia, and others, while also holding editorial roles as International Editor of the Austin Journal of Sleep Disorders and Deputy Chief Editor of the International Medical Journal Malaysia. Under his leadership, the latter was successfully indexed in Elsevier Scopus in 2011.
His leadership extends to hospital administration and national service. He was the Executive Director of the IIUM Medical Specialist Centre from 2018 to 2023, and he currently serves on the National Board of ORL-HNS while acting as an examiner for the National Conjoint Board examinations. Through his combined roles as clinician, teacher, researcher, and leader, Dr. Zamzil Amin continues to advance the field of otorhinolaryngology in Malaysia, with a particular focus on paediatric airway disorders and sleep-related breathing problems. His career reflects a balance of patient care, academic excellence, and institutional leadership, making him a respected figure in his field and a good representative for the University as a whole.
