Expert Profile

Dr. Fitri Yusof is a Malaysian aquaculture geneticist, conservation advocate, and educator whose work bridges advanced fish genetics, sustainable aquaculture, and digital-era entrepreneurship. Trained in fisheries genetics, hatchery technology, and marine conservation, he has built a multidisciplinary portfolio that positions him as a rising expert in Southeast Asian aquaculture and a dynamic educator within the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). His contributions span scientific research, community-based conservation, and innovative teaching that integrates fieldwork, modern laboratory techniques, and experiential learning. A dedicated member of both the Malaysia Nature Society (MNS) and the Malaysian Fisheries Society (MFS), Dr. Fitri actively promotes science-based conservation of Malaysia’s freshwater and marine biodiversity. His research interests include fish cytogenetics, chromosome manipulation (triploidy induction), reproductive biology, hatchery optimisation, and molecular tools for conservation such as eDNA and microsatellite markers.  Career Highlights Across IIUM’s Department of Marine Science and the Institute of Oceanography and Maritime Studies (INOCEM), Dr. Fitri teaches a diverse portfolio of courses including Seed Production, Mariculture, Fish Genetics and Breeding, Fish Biology, Fisheries Oceanography, and Recreational Fisheries.

He is regarded for his highly structured teaching, integrating CPBL frameworks, field trips, hatchery simulations, and practical assessments that develop students into field-ready aquaculture professionals. He supervises research, leads student fieldwork in rivers, peatland areas, and hatcheries, and mentors young scientists in molecular techniques, larval rearing, and data-driven decision-making in aquaculture operations.

Research and Innovations

Dr. Fitri’s scientific work sits at the intersection of genetics, aquaculture production efficiency, and conservation biology. His expertise includes:
Cytogenetics & Chromosome Manipulation
Triploidy induction (thermal/chemical shocks), ploidy verification, hybridisation strategies, and genome mapping for performance enhancement.

Molecular Ecology & Conservation
Environmental DNA (eDNA), population genetics for threatened species, reproductive biology of Malaysian pelagic fish, and biodiversity assessments.

Hatchery & Larval Biology
Optimisation of seed production systems, larval survival predictors, broodstock conditioning, phytoplankton–zooplankton live-feed dynamics (e.g., Moina, Artemia), and water quality management.

Entrepreneurship & Digital Innovation

Beyond academia, Dr. Fitri is an energetic entrepreneur who leverages digital tools to empower young Malaysians especially IIUM students and community toward financial and creative independence. He also teaches students how to use Canva for micro-entrepreneurship, freelancing, and personal branding.

Digital Marketing & Affiliate Income He is an experienced practitioner of:

  • Shopee Affiliate Program (product review content, CPC optimisation, GMV tracking)

  • TikTok Affiliate (short-form video strategies, algorithm-friendly hooks, conversion optimisation)

He guides students in building sustainable side incomes through authentic product reviews, content pillars, and analytics-based posting strategies.

Research Vision & Impact Dr. Fitri’s work advances the future of sustainable aquaculture through the integration of molecular genetics, ecological knowledge, and digital innovation. His vision is centred on:
  • Improving seed quality through genetic.
  • Enhancing sustainability of freshwater and marine aquaculture
  • Strengthening conservation of Malaysia’s native fish species
  • Building digital-savvy students with income-generating skillsets
