Expert Profile

Dr. Maryam Zahaba is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Kulliyyah of Science, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). As a recognised national expert in occupational health, specifically in indoor air quality (IAQ), she has been appointed by the Lembaga Penilaian Kompetensi Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan (LPKKKP) NIOSH Malaysia to serve on the IAQ Assessor Competency Committee (2025–2026) and the IAQ Assessor Examination Committee (JKPe IAQ) (2024–2027). Previously, she served as the Deputy Chairman of the Kulliyyah of Science Safety and Health Committee (KOSHSEC) from August 2020 to July 2024. She was awarded the Safety Award during KOS Takrim Day 2024.

Dr. Maryam is a prolific researcher driving impactful studies in occupational safety, environmental health, and advanced materials. Her latest cutting-edge research focuses on IAQ mitigation strategies for marine transportation and calls for the development of dedicated ship IAQ guidelines. She has also expanded her technical footprint into advanced environmental technologies, including synergising polymeric membranes for carbon dioxide (CO2) gas separation and conducting comparative analyses of hydrogen sensors in accordance with ISO 26142 standards. This complements her ongoing critical work in identifying occupational exposure to chrysotile (asbestos) in vehicle maintenance and developing agro-based nanofilters to capture suspended titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles.

Deeply committed to knowledge transfer and societal well-being, Dr. Maryam has served as the Academic Bureau for the Pahang Environment Safety and Health Association (PESHA) for over four years, actively translating occupational safety guidelines into community practice. She extends her scientific rigor globally as an active peer reviewer for prominent academic journals, including Surface Review and Letters and the Journal of Occupational Safety and Health (JOSH). Highly versatile, she bridges scientific execution with creative aptitude, where she served as the website coordinator for the Department of Chemistry, having served as the Kulliyyah’s annual magazine designer for two consecutive years.
