Expert Profile
Dr. Mohd Hanif Jainlabdin is an Assistant Professor at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), specialising in microbiology and exploring the interface between infectious diseases, One Health, and planetary health. His research integrates infectious disease diagnostics, molecular microbiology, One Health, and planetary health, with a particular focus on translating scientific discoveries into practical solutions for healthcare, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.
He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences (Hons.) from IIUM in 2011, followed by a Master's degree in Health Sciences from the National University of Malaysia (UKM), where he focused on the development of molecular diagnostic tests for fungal infections. He later earned his Ph.D. in Biology from Royal Holloway, University of London, in 2019, where he developed rapid and efficient diagnostic tools for invasive candidiasis.
Dr. Jainlabdin has secured numerous research grants and received several recognitions for his scientific contributions. Notably, he was awarded the Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN) Fellowship supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). His research has also been supported by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, the Microbiology Society (UK), and the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
Beyond research, Dr. Jainlabdin has taken on various leadership and institutional development roles. He is a co-founder of the Institute of Planetary Survival for Sustainable Well-being (PLANETIIUM), a multidisciplinary institute dedicated to advancing research, education, innovation, and community engagement in planetary health and sustainable well-being. Through PLANETIIUM, he has contributed to the development of collaborative research programmes, educational platforms, and strategic partnerships that bridge academia, government, industry, and local communities.
As a frequent speaker at conferences, training programmes, and knowledge exchange activities, Dr. Jainlabdin is committed to bridging science, education, and community engagement. He is spearheading initiatives such as the Educational Planetary Health Learning Programme (EARTHLING), which introduces planetary health concepts through experiential learning and community outreach. He also serves as a member of several science education think tanks and advisory groups for national agencies. His work integrates advances in diagnostic science with the broader goals of planetary health and sustainable well-being.
