Expert Profile
Professor S. M. A. Motakabber is a distinguished academic and researcher with a prolific career spanning over three decades. Born in Bangladesh, his educational journey began at the University of Rajshahi (RU), where he obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) degrees in Applied Physics and Electronics in 1986 and 1987, respectively. He further pursued his doctoral studies at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), achieving his PhD in 2011. Professor Motakabber's professional experience is equally impressive. He embarked on his career as a scientific officer, first at the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (1991-1992) and then at the Bangladesh Scientific and Industrial Research (1992-1994), demonstrating his early commitment to national research endeavors. In 1993, Professor Motakabber embarked on his academic career as a lecturer at his alma mater, the University of Rajshahi's Department of Applied Physics and Electronics. His dedication to teaching was evident as he rose through the ranks, becoming an Associate Professor in 2008. Professor Motakabber's leadership qualities were recognized in 2003 when he joined the International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) as an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer and Communication Engineering. He further excelled by serving as both Head of the Department and dean of the Engineering Faculty. Returning to the University of Rajshahi in 2008, Professor Motakabber continued his stellar academic journey until 2012. In April 2012, he took a pivotal step by joining the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). His dedication and expertise were acknowledged in February 2024 when he was promoted to Professor. Professor Motakabber's research interests are remarkably diverse, encompassing a multitude of disciplines within electrical and electronic engineering. These include microelectronics, VLSI circuits, instrumentation and measurement, control systems and robotics, industrial electronics, embedded system design, electric vehicles (EVs), Internet of Things (IoT), radio-frequency identification (RFID) and near-field communication (NFC), biomedical signal processing, wireless communication, antennas, microwave technology, satellite communication, fiber-optic communication, wireless sensor networks, micro energy harvesting, microgrid systems, renewable energy, and green technology. Throughout his career, Professor Motakabber has made significant contributions to the field. He has published over 200 research papers in esteemed journals and conference proceedings, authored textbooks and research books, and secured numerous research grants to support his groundbreaking work. Professor Motakabber's dedication extends beyond academia. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and a Chartered Engineer (UK). He has actively contributed to the field by serving as editor of prestigious journals like the International Journal of Nanoelectronics and Materials (2017-2021), the Asian Journal of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (current), and the Journal of Sustainable Engineering and Science (Editor-in-Chief since 2020). Professor Motakabber's achievements have been duly recognized. He has received numerous gold medals and various honors from the Faculty of Engineering and the university, solidifying his position as a leading figure in the field.
