Expert Profile
Professor Dato' Dr. Ahmad Murad Merican is professor of social and intellectual history, Centre for Malay-Islamic Civilizational Studies, International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization, International Islamic University Malaysia (CMICS-ISTAC). He is a senior fellow at the Center for Southeast Asia Research and Hub (Search), De La Salle University, Manila, The Philippines. He was a visiting professor at Universitas Andalas in West Sumatera in 2006 at the Faculty of Social and Political Science, involved in establishing the media and journalism program. Professor Ahmad Murad was the first recipient of the Honorary President Resident Fellowship, Perdana Leadership Foundation 2009-2011. He has a PhD in the history and philosophy of science (University of Malaya), and baccalaureates in Political Science (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis) and Journalism (Institut Teknologi MARA) respectively. He obtained a Master of Arts (Mass Communication) from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Minnesota. He has written more than 26 books on his subjects of interest. He was a Vice President of the Pacific Asia Communication Association (PACA) and a life member of the Malaysia Historical Society. His academic and research interests include journalism and media studies, epistemology, history of social science, intellectual history, colonialism, and Kedah-Penang history and heritage. He engages in public advocacy through essays, commentaries and columns in the op-ed pages as well as through visual art. He started his academic career in 1986. Some of his books include Media History: World Views and Communication Futures (2005), In Other Words: Ideas on Journalism, Social Science and Society (2017), Tanah Air: Passing Through the Malay Archipelago (2022), and Countering the Western Canon: Other Ways of Knowing Journalism and Media (2023). He is a columnist contributing for the daily the New Straits Times, the national opinion journal, Dewan Masyarakat, and the Jakarta Post.
