Expert Profile

Dr. Nurdiyana Binti Mohamed is a registered Clinical Microbiologist (since 2023) and medical pathologist with a strong research focus on molecular microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, and tropical pathogens. After completing her Doctor of Pathology (DrPath) in Medical Microbiology at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), she joined the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Dr. Nurdiyana actively bridges clinical diagnostics, medical education, and community outreach. She spearheads and collaborates on molecular-driven research initiatives at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre (SASMEC@IIUM) while concurrently dedicated to training preclinical medical students and contributing to public health education through community programs. Fields of Interest & Research Focus Your research portfolio is heavily oriented toward molecular applications and genomic surveillance, focusing on the following core areas:

  • Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) & Genomic Surveillance: Leading genomic and antimicrobial susceptibility profiling of high-consequence multi-drug resistant pathogens, with active surveillance projects on:

    • Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) at SASMEC@IIUM.

    • Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole resistant Burkholderia pseudomallei across tertiary hospitals.

  • Molecular Microbiology & Diagnostics: Utilizing molecular tools to investigate the genetic characterization, epidemiology, and resistance mechanisms of clinical pathogens.

  • Viral Epidemiology: Studying the prevalence and clinical characteristics of occult viral infections, specifically Occult Hepatitis B Infection, within clinical screening cohorts at SASMEC@IIUM.

Teaching & Academic Contributions

  • Undergraduate Medical Education (Year 1 & Year 2): Involved in curriculum delivery, lecturing, and facilitating practical/tutorial sessions for preclinical medical students in the following foundational areas:

    • Microbiology: Bacterial pathogenesis, clinical virology, mycology, and diagnostic laboratory principles.

    • Immunology: Core concepts of host defense, innate and adaptive immunity, and immunopathology.

    • Parasitology: Identification, life cycles, and clinical management of medically important protozoa, helminths, and vectors endemic to tropical regions.

Community Engagement & Advocacy

  • Member, I-MEDIK (Ikatan Pengamal Perubatan dan Kesihatan Muslim Malaysia): Actively contributing to community health awareness, ethics, and advocacy.

  • Public Health Outreach: Frequently serves as an invited speaker for school-based health programs, specializing in delivering essential education on sexual and reproductive health to adolescents.
