Expert Profile
Dr. Hairul Aini Hamzah graduated from University Putra Malaysia with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences in 2002. She pursued Master of Science in Immunology at the same university under the sponsorship of the National Science Fellowship (MOSTI) and graduated in 2005. Due to her interest in research, she enrolled in the Ph.D. of Medical Sciences program in 2006, specializing in the field of Medical Microbiology at the International Islamic University Malaysia. Throughout her postgraduate studies, she mastered virology and skills such as qPCR, ELISA, DNA sequencing (Sanger Methods), and Bioinformatics. After graduating in 2011, she assumed the role of an academician in Medical Microbiology. In 2019, she was appointed as an Associate Professor. She has held administrative positions such as laboratory coordinator, Kulliyyah representative of occupational safety and health, academic coordinator, in-charge of the Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Physiology Unit, and currently, she is holding the position of a postgraduate coordinator (2023 – 2025). She chaired postgraduate programs such as the tissue culture workshop and 3MT thesis competition. She has been teaching immunology and medical microbiology subjects to pre-clinical MBBS students and has supervised 7 master and 1 Ph.D. students and co-supervised 7 master and 2 Ph.D. She serves as a reviewer for many journal articles, conference abstracts, and postgraduate theses from IIUM and non-IIUM. In her research, she is interested in establishing new screening and diagnostic methods for pathogen-driven non-communicable diseases through molecular and immunological techniques. Currently, she is actively involved in areas of pathogen factors in colorectal cancer and mild cognitive impairment. Other involvements are related to antibacterial and antifungal resistance, herbal medicine, and cell culture.
