Expert Profile
Samiya Riaz holds a Ph.D. (2023) in Forensic Dentistry from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), where her research focused on the use of advanced digital imaging for forensic human identification and sex prediction based on maxillary posterior tooth morphology. Through 2D and 3D morphometric analysis, she established models that demonstrated the uniqueness of occlusal traits—contributing significantly to the growing field of digital forensic odontology. Her work has earned multiple research awards, including best oral presentation prizes and gold medals at national scientific meetings. She was also awarded first prize in the USM Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition and progressed to the national-level semi-finals in 2023 for this research. Prior to her doctoral work, she completed a Master of Science in Dentistry at USM in 2019, where she investigated regenerative endodontics using dental pulp stem cells. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from de'Montmorency College of Dentistry, University of Health Sciences, Pakistan (2003). Since joining IIUM in 2024, Dr. Samiya has been serving as an assistant professor in the Department of Oral Biology. She is involved in undergraduate teaching and undergraduate research supervision, particularly in oral biology and conservative dentistry. She has also contributed to scientific planning committees. Her research interests include digital dental imaging, forensic odontology, dental morphology, sex estimation, and AI-driven morphometric analysis. She has published on the application of stereomicroscopy, intraoral scanning, and 3D modelling in forensic dentistry. Her work contributes to the development of non-invasive, tooth-based identification methods and population-specific dental datasets. Dr. Samiya continues to integrate evidence-based practices and advanced technologies into her academic and research activities, with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and the advancement of forensic dental sciences.
