Expert Profile
Dr Mohd Hafiz Arzmi is a passionate microbiologist, immunologist, and inventor. His expertise includes polymicrobial interactions, biofilms, microbiomes, probiotics, and oral carcinogenesis.
He is currently the Deputy Director, Technology Transfer Office (TTO), Research Management Centre (RMC), IIUM and the Honorary (Senior) Fellow of Melbourne Dental School, The University of Melbourne, Australia. He is also the Head of the Cluster of Cancer Research Initiative IIUM (COCRII), leading a transdisciplinary study in cancer research in East Coast Malaysia. He also founded the B-Five group to support young researchers at IIUM Kuantan Campus. He was formerly the Deputy Dean of Student Development and Community Engagement, Kulliyyah of Dentistry, IIUM (2021-2023), and the Head of Grant Management Unit, RMC, IIUM (2018-2021). He was the former vice president for the Malaysian Society for Oral Microbiologists and Oral Immunologists (MySOMOI) and the Chair of Science Integrity, Young Scientist Network, Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM).
Since 2008, he has been working on Candida species, which has been reported to be involved in oral carcinogenesis at the Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Malaya, where he discovered the important role of phenotypic switching in the pathogenicity of Candida spp. In 2012, he continued his journey to find the relationship between polymicrobial infection and the development of oral cancer at Melbourne Dental School, The University of Melbourne, Australia, where he successfully linked the development of oral cancer to polymicrobial interactions of Candida albicans, Streptococcus mutans, and Actinomyces naeslundii.
He has been actively publishing in many journals, books and newspapers on microbiology, immunology, machine learning and ethics. He is currently supervising post-doctoral, PhD, Master, Interns, and Final Year Project (FYP) students, both local and international. He has secured various prestigious national, international and industrial grants, including the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) and Prototype Research Grant Scheme (PRGS) by Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Kajian Jangka Pendek (KJP) by the Ministry of Economy, 100 STI by MOSTI, MyOHUN and USAID among others, amounting of more than RM 4 million.
He also won various awards, including a gold medal and a special award at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2022. Among his commercialised products are Oral Synbiotic (OroSYN) toothpaste which was shortlisted for INNOVATHON Season 2. He also works closely with several local and international industries, including PETRONAS, NFA Technologies Sdn Bhd, and Jardin Pharma Berhad, Regal Malay Capital Berhad, Cytomics Pty Ltd, and Oxford RMC Ltd (UK) a start-up company of the University of Oxford, UK.
He actively contributes to the community by disseminating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) to Schools in Malaysia supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) and Ministry of Education (MOE) Malaysia. Besides, he is also actively delivering Islamic knowledge to various communities, including the Australian Malay Foundation, MECCA, and Sri Lankan Islamic Society Melbourne. He was the Imam at Masjid Al-Fateh, Coburg and Brunswick Mosque, Melbourne, from 2012 until 2016. Currently, he is the Imam and Khatib at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque, IIUM (Kuantan Campus).
