Expert Profile
Dr Belal Barakat Sulaiman Salhab is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh at the Abdulhamid Abusulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), where he also obtained his PhD in Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh. His research interests centre on Usul al-Fiqh, Maqasid al-Shariah, and Islamic political jurisprudence (al-Siyasah al-Sharʿiyyah), with particular emphasis on foundational and analytical studies of contemporary issues. He is also interested in the intellectual and methodological interconnections among the Islamic disciplines, particularly the relationship between Usul al-Fiqh and Islamic theology (ʿIlm al-Kalam), and the influence of their interaction on the formation and development of Islamic legal theory. His scholarship explores the methodological capacity of Islamic legal theory to engage with emerging realities and contemporary challenges . A central concern of his research is bridging the classical Usuli tradition with contemporary contexts through a balanced consideration of legal principles, objectives, circumstances, and consequences. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and contributes to funded research projects, postgraduate students supervision (Master & PhD), academic reviewing and examining, and curriculum development.
