Expert Profile

Dr. Firdaus Yusof is a registered optometrist and academic specializing in clinical optometry and vision science. He received his Bachelor of Optometry (Hons.) from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2002 and subsequently joined the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 2003, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the Department of Optometry and Visual Science (DOVS) under the Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences. In 2006, Dr. Yusof completed his Master of Optometry at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, with a research focus on colour vision. Upon returning to IIUM, he contributed significantly to the development of the IIUM Optometry Clinic, strengthening its clinical services and training infrastructure. He later obtained his Ph.D. in Vision Science from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 2014, with doctoral research centered on retinal blood flow, glaucoma, and nocturnal hypotension—areas that continue to underpin his scholarly pursuits. Dr. Yusof has served multiple terms as Head of Department, including as the inaugural head of DOVS, where he oversaw academic programme development, clinical service expansion, and faculty advancement. Beyond IIUM, he actively contributes to national optometry education and practice through his involvement with the Malaysian Optical Council, particularly in programme accreditation and institutional audits for optometry and opticianry training across Malaysia. His current research interests focus on myopia and its management, particularly through advanced imaging modalities such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the development of ophthalmic interventions for myopia control. His work bridges clinical practice, academic teaching, and translational research, with the aim of advancing optometric care and vision science in Malaysia and beyond.
