Critical Care Nursing

The Critical Care Nursing (CCN) department is dedicated and committed to nurturing nursing graduates at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Since the establishment of the department in 2013, the department has been in the right direction, following the projections set earlier. Realising Kulliyyah’s vision and mission to plan and offer higher degree nursing programmes, the department was among the earliest in Kulliyyah of Nursing who started writing the proposal for Master in Advanced Nursing Practice (MAP) by coursework for Critical Care Nursing and Emergency Care. These two courses were approved and soon will be offered for the first intake in February 2022. Earlier, the department was also involved in establishing Master of Nursing and PhD in Nursing by research. In view of support to establishing our IIUM teaching hospital, the department continues its contribution in producing nurses with post-registration training. The CCN department offered Post Basic in Nursing Programmes for three programmes (1) Emergency Care, (2) Critical Care and (3) Peri-operative Care to the first cohort in September 2019, and the second cohort will commence in January 2022. We are ready to continue these programmes as demands. The department is also planning for the Critical Care and Emergency Care programmes at Advanced Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma. These are to meet the objective for establishing the department and the demand not only for our IIUM teaching hospital but also for the nation.

In order to ensure the sustainable development of the department, serial interviews have been conducted for staff recruitment. The recruitment was based on the department’s projection-based to the subspecialties offered under the department. The subspecialties are Critical Care Emergency, Trauma & Disaster Nursing and Perioperative Care. At the end of 2013, the forensic subspecialty was placed under the purview of the CCN department. Thus, we have added another niche area in the department. We are also planning to develop a Master in Forensic Nursing in the near future as we have projected two of our academic trainees specialised in this area. The department has six active academics; four with PhD, one with Master and one with academic fellows. One associate professor is on sabbatical leave. With another nine academics and academic trainees are still on PhD study leave in various department’s niche areas, we are optimistic and committed that the department is in line with the university mission and vision and support the Sustainable Development Goal for quality education. This promotes lifelong learning among nurses and thus provides a pathway for quality healthcare services in serving the Ummah, InsyaAllah.
