OSTOMATES IN COMMUNITY SETTING: A HOME VISIT
Organizer: Ostomates Support Group (OSG)
Several home visits to the ostomates’ houses were carried out in October 2019 with the aim to examine the ostomate’s lived experience in our community setting. Specifically, the aims were to examine stoma care management in community setting, their adaptation to daily life activities, and effect to their psychosocial aspects. Accessed to the ostomates were obtained mostly from the IIUMMC. They were informed about the home visit and the activities involved. If they agreed, we set the date and time for the home visit.

Most of the ostomates lived with the family. We explored their living experience through interview which also included the ostomate’s family member experiences as the caregiver in managing the stoma. In general, these home visits took about 2 hours per house.

From these home visits, we learned a lot about the ostomate’s lived experience in managing the stoma, thus provide a valuable lesson about the importance of taking care our gastrointestinal tract (GIT).

The obtained information had opened our eyes about their needs in order to maintain their quality of life. Depression; embarrassment; social isolation; lack of confident, knowledge, and supports from the family and society; and financial issue due to expenses from the use of stoma bag and the appliances were among the important issues that we had highlighted from these home visits which require for further action to be carried out.
