RESEARCH MANAGEMENT CENTRE

This committee is responsible to the URC for the conduct of all research by performing the following duties and functions: -

1. Handling evaluation of research proposals submitted through the Centre of Studies;
2. Monitoring and assessing the progress of the ongoing project;
3. Arranging evaluation of research output, suggesting any changes, if necessary, and recommending to the URC to approve the Research Output;
4. Evaluation of the application of research exhibition;
5. Evaluation of commercialization potential of Research Output;
6. Recommendation of a method of commercialization;
7. Review of Licensing and Commercialisation Agreement; and
8. Evaluation of establishment of start-up/spin-off companies.

Members of the REC comprise the following: -

a) Director of RMC as Chairman;
b) The Deputy Directors of RMC as the Secretary.
c) The Heads of Research of relevant KCDIO;
d) Representative from the Finance Division;
e) Representative from Office of the Legal Adviser; and
f) Any other person appointed by the Director of RMC.

This committee is responsible to the URC for the conduct of all research involving humans and human samples by performing the following duties and functions: -

1. To ensure that the research conforms with proper guidelines for human rights, compliance with the law, conflict of interest, safety, and health;
2. To protect the University against potential legal implications due to unethical conduct in research involving humans; To care for vulnerable individuals who need additional protection during research; 
3. To ensure that IIUM research conforms with any legal and regulatory requirements.

Members of the IREC shall comprise the following: -

1. A minimum of eight (8), and a maximum of twelve (12) members. The membership is an equitable representation including academicians, clinicians, scientists, non-scientists, members of the community, a lawyer/expert in ethics, a social worker/layperson/teacher/a religious scholar
2. The committee will consist of a Chairperson, alternate chairperson, a secretariat, and 7-12 active members who represent an appropriate balance of professional, ethical, legal, cultural, educational, spiritual, and community interests.
3. The IREC is constituted according to the requirements of the University.
4. An expert in the relevant research area, preferably from Medical background, shall be the Chairman of the IREC.
5. The RMC shall provide the Secretary and the Secretariat for the IREC.

This Committee was established to comply with the requirements of the

Malaysia Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity Policy and Guideline 2015. IBBC is responsible to oversee all activities involving the handling, manipulating, working, using, storing, and disposing of infectious and potentially infectious agents/materials and biological toxins in all forms and sizes of laboratories and containment zones in the University.

All activities involving infectious and potentially infectious agents/materials and biological toxins must be conducted in biosafety standards and best practices to ensure the safety of personnel, the university community protects the environment, and comply with the national and international policies, guidelines, and regulations related to biosafety and biosecurity.

The functions of IBBC include:

1. Identifying activities that are under the purview of the IBBC;
2. Reviewing and approving any application to perform activities involving the use of infectious and potentially infectious agents/materials and/or biological toxins in a laboratory and defined containment zone;
3. Ensuring that all activities involving the use of infectious and potentially infectious agents/materials and biological toxins are conducted according to the relevant guidelines; and
4. Maintaining compliance with the national and international policies, guidelines, and regulations related to laboratory biosafety and biosecurity.

Members of IBBC are appointed by the Rector and their selection is based on their expertise in the field of Living Modified Organism (LMO) and Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) as well as their involvement in managing activities on the two fields and biological related activities.

This committee is responsible to the URC for the conduct of all research involving animals by performing the following duties and functions: -

1. To protect animal welfare by minimizing excessive thirst and hunger, pain and injury, fear and distress, and allowing animals to express their natural behavior.
2. To minimize the number of animals used in research by replacing the animals (whenever possible) with other alternatives.
3. To improve the techniques engaged during research.
4. To minimize the impact of the animal and public consciences.

The ACUC comprises at least four (4) persons, each of whom is appointed to represent one of the following categories:

1. A trained practicing veterinarian with experience in the biological and clinical characteristics of the species of animals used.
2. A qualified person or scientific researcher with appropriate experience in the use of animals for scientific purposes.
3. A lawyer or an advocate who has the knowledge and experience in animal ethics and other related matters.
4. A non-scientific person representing the general community who is not affiliated in any way with the IIUM and not a member of the immediate family of a person who is affiliated with the IIUM.
5. An expert in the relevant research area, preferably from a scientific background, experienced with animal handling, and holds a senior position within the IIUM shall be the Chairman of the ACUC.
6. RMC is the Secretariat for the ACUC
