Gombak, 1 and 2 December 2021. The Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws IIUM and  Harun M Hashim Law Centre IIUM co-hosts the 9th Global Waqf Conference 2021 (Webinar) with Finterra, Unirazak, Al Madinah International University and the Waqf Centre for Indonesia Development and Studies (WaCIDS) and Islamic University of Bahawalpur Pakistan as strategic partners. The theme is “Embracing the Present and Envisaging the Future”.

  1. The two day webinar is officiated by the TYT Negeri Pulau Pinang, Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and managed to record a participation of 1077 participants with many great speakers, waqf practitioners, academicians, researchers locally and abroad. It is the objective of the 9th GWC 2021 to disseminate the latest research findings on Waqf and other Islamic social finances and analyse ideas on the development and management locally and globally.  Indeed, it managed to establish intellectual and physical linkages between various parties. There are 5 keynote speakers, 11 Waqf Practitioners and 40 academic research papers were presented and discussed by the participants.

    The 9th GWC was convened by Datuk Dr Mohd Ghazali Md Nor and the Director for 9th GWC was AP To’ Puan Dr Nor Asiah Mohamad.
  1. In his Welcoming Remarks, the Dean of Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, IIUM welcomed the two new GWC strategic partners i.e. Waqf Centre for Indonesian Development Studies (WaCIDS) and Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan (IUB). In conjunction with 9th GWC, the Kulliyyah has published a new book of Global Waqf Series, edited by Dr Nor Asiah Mohamad, Dr Md Zahidul Islam, Dr Zati Ilham A Manaf and Dr  M. Amrullah Drs Nasrullah from AIKOL.

In the Opening Remarks, TYT Tun Ahmad Fuzi called the participants to actively participate in the noble act of Waqf as reminded by Allah SWT as the sadaqah Jariah and practiced by the Prophet SAW and his companions. It is not only a religious act but an Islamic social finance which supports the socio-economy of the ummah.  
  3. The President of IIUM, Tan Sri Dr Mohd Daud Bakar was the first Keynote Speaker. He spoke on the New Paradigm of New Jurisprudence of Waqf. Tan Sri Dr Daud has challenged the participants to think beyond the traditional jurisprudence of Waqf and promoting the ijtihadi concept of waqf by looking into other school of thoughts in developing hukm on Waqf. Mindset of Waqf care takers, waqf practitioners and stakeholders must change. Focus should be more on Waqf creation and Waqf Generation (production) instead of waqf distribution. Democratisation of waqf should take place with the government and the corporate sectors to be the main Waqf players supported with clear State or National policies in repositioning Waqf as a solution for problems of the ummah. The President of IIUM also challenged the participants to innovatively think and apply a more flexible, practical but Shariah compliant principles in Waqf adjudication. Other keynotes speakers are Dr Hisham Dafterdar from  Awkaf Australia, Dr Imam Teguh Saptono from Badan Wakaf Indonesia, HE Mr Lawal Maidoki from Sokoto State Zakat and Wakaf and Eng Prof Dr Athar Mahboob, Vice Chancellor, Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan.
