A TOTAL of 391 new students have been enrolled at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) for 2018-2019, which is a 10 per cent increase from 365 students in 2017-2018.

Yesterday, during the oath-taking ceremony in conjunction with orientation week, Rector of UNISSA Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal said that the university is looking at future prospects to keep apace of current developments.

“UNISSA guarantees that its study courses are relevant to current needs, and will accordingly develop them to ensure that the quality meets international standards,” he said.

“Various initiatives have also been put into place, to enhance the marketability of our graduates in an increasingly challenging and complex job market.”

Dr Haji Norarfan also informed the new undergraduates about UNISSA’s ‘Study Abroad Progr-amme’, where those with excellent results will be given the opportunity to study at overseas institutions in their third year, such as the International Islamic University Malaysia, Islamic Science University of Malaysia, Reading University, Exeter University, the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates and the Sultan Qaboos University in Oman.

“Other than that, the students will also be given the opportunity to attend workshops, courses and youth camps within the country and abroad, such as the eight-week long Arabic Language proficiency intensive course at the Sultan Qaboos College in Oman, and other courses,” said Dr Haji Norarfan, adding, “Students will also be given early exposure on their chosen careers, during their industrial training.”

He then concluded his speech with a reminder that it is UNISSA’s aim to produce graduates that are excellent in all aspects, apart from academic learning.

Throughout the orientation week, the new intake will be familiarised with the administrative affairs of UNISSA, along with introductory briefings on their respective courses and student activity programmes.
