BACKGROUND

Counseling Unit was established on 15th December 1989 with only two (2) counselors, with its primary objective to provide IIUM students with quality counseling services. Then, in year 1995 the Counseling Unit was upgraded to Counseling Services Department (CSD) and later changed to Counseling Services Centre (CSC) on 15th March 2010 as part of the transformation plan to align with the mission and vision of IIUM.    

In the Board of Governors (BOG) Meeting No. 42 held on 20th October 2015, it was agreed that Alumni & Career Services Division’s functions related to career services was transferred to the CSC. Thus, Counseling Services Centre has changed its name to Counseling and Career Services Centre (CCSC) and ever since then, CCSC has become the backbone of IIUM in providing counseling and career related services and organizing beneficial programmes to IIUM community.

BACKGROUND

Entrepreneurship Unit (formerly known as Entrepreneurship and Management Unit) has been established under the Student Development Division since 2004. The Majlis Meeting No.98 which was held on 28thOctober 2010 had approved the establishment of Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) in order to coordinate and manage activities as well as to conduct entrepreneurship-related academic programs.

At its early stage of operation on 3rd January 2011, EDC had begun its operation with only two officers. Later, on 15th February 2011, the first Director of the Entrepreneurship Development Centre had been appointed to lead the over-spilling entrepreneurial activities which cater the high demand of entrepreneurship programs. With the abundance of activities and programs, the expansion of staff has successfully uphold the Centre as a leading centre of entrepreneurship.

BACKGROUND

In addition to academic excellence, the primary vision and mission of a tertiary education institution also aims at producing the future leaders of the society. IIUM embraces and celebrates this idea - the establishment of the IIUM World Debate and Oratory Centre (IWON) is yet another manifestation of this. After having directed much resources and energies into ensuring its continued participation in debating tournaments, local and international, the University realises, quite rightly so, the benefits its students stand to gain from being well-equipped with communication skills that are coupled with and complemented by a culture of knowledge-seeking and critical thinking.

Whilst the University Debating Associations are avenues of training for competitive debating, IWON is the forum that provides the students mass in general with an attractive and convenient alternative for acquiring the communication skills so necessary for the students' successful venture into positions of leadership.

BACKGROUND

The sports section in IIUM was established in 1983. Since then, sports have become vibrant activities in IIUM. In 1990, the sports activities in IIUM have drastically increased in term of quantity and quality.  In 1991, the role of sports section became more demanding when IIUM was indirectly involved with the World University Sports Federation (FISU), Asian University Sports Federation (AUSF) and AseanUniversity Sports Council (AUSC).  

The primary purpose of Sports Development Centre (SDC) is to provide opportunities for students and staff to pursue their sports and recreational interest. The focus of SDC programmes are blending and learning new motor skill while coordinating all sports activities, monitor the progress of IIUM sports development and supervise the maintenance of venues and sports facilities of the university.  

IIUM Gombak has two (2) Sports Complexes, each for male and female community. They are located at the northern side of the campus. The university has also sports facilities in other campuses i.eKuantan, Gambang and Petaling Jaya. The sports facilities are available for all students and staff of the IIUM as well as visitors.  All bookings can be made through the office of SDC with minimal fees charge.

BACKGROUND

International Islamic University Malaysia has a strong tradition of volunteerism serving the surrounding community. It is in line with the University’s theme as the Garden of Knowledge and Virtue where knowledge is to be translated into actions for the benefits of mankind. In March 1995, the IIUM Management established the Centre for Community Service and Continuing Education supervised by the Office of the Rector. Its main objective was to institutionalize community engagement as the University’s contribution to the sustainable development of the surrounding community and the world at large. The acronym CENSERVE was introduced in 1996.

CENSERVE was created as a platform for staff and students to plan activities for the community. Every year hundreds of students register as CENSERVE volunteers under various clubs and project teams. The staffs participate as club advisors, trainers and invited speakers during talks.

CENSERVE has produced thousands of students with skills on volunteerism, humanitarian work and project management. Through CENSERVE activities, students understand that IIUM graduates shall not only be well versed in his or her field of study but even more so; they shall also be socially responsible and has strong desire to improve the lives of the ummah and humankind. They are given the empowerment to plan, and implement community service projects guided by CENSERVE officials.

Thousands of school students, teenagers, orphans, villagers, the disables and Orang Asli have received benefits from CENSERVE projects.

BACKGROUND

As one of the leading universities in the Muslim countries, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has attracted many excellent talents to join the University as students or as staff, regardless of their disabilities. The opportunity provided by the IIUM has opened doors to persons with disabilities to play an equally important role in the process of developing the country and the Muslim ummah as a whole.

In view of the increasing number of students and staff with various types of disabilities, in April 2012 a group of staff and students with disabilities proposed the idea to the Honourable Rector to establish a unit within the University to cater specifically to the needs of persons with disabilities, as generally practiced especially at all leading universities in the world. With the strong support of the University, the Disability Services Unit (DSU) of the IIUM was established in July 2012 to cater specifically to the needs of students, staff and visitors with disabilities at the IIUM. It seeks to provide equal opportunity for comprehensive excellence and access to teaching and learning through enhancement of facilities and services for persons with disabilities. This is in line with the Islamic spirit of al-'adl wa al-ihsan, and in accordance with Malaysia's Persons with Disabilities Act 2008. It is also consistent with the IIUMyFamily concept that promotes inclusion of students and staff with disability in education and employment.

The establishment of the DSU coincides with the directive from the Ministry of Education (MOE) to establish such a unit as stated in Phase 2 of the "Action Plan to Improve Teaching and Learning of Disabled Students at Institutions of Higher Learning". The Action Plan consists of four strategic objectives: 

i) accessibility & support system for teaching and learning,

ii) enhancement of quality of life,

iii) creation of disabled-friendly environment & services, and

iv) career development programmes for disabled students.

The strategic objectives are to be implemented during the period of 2011-2015.

The DSU is currently placed under the Office of the Deputy Rector (Student Development and Community Engagement) and its office is located at Level 1, Muhammad Abdul-Rauf Building. It is currently headed by Prof. Dr. Ruzita Mohd. Amin, who is also a Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences. The DSU works closely with the STADD, particularly the Welfare Unit of STADD, the Development Division, the Management Services Division (MSD) and all other kulliyyahs/departments/centers of the University in undertaking its duties.

The DSU has been appointed as Advisor to the IIUM Ibn Ummi Maktum Club (I-MaC), which is the society of disabled students of the University. Together, both the DSU and I-MaC complement each other in ensuring the needs of disabled students, in particular, are attended to.
