Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ruhaya Hussin is an academic and researcher in Psychology at the International Islamic University Malaysia, specialising in Industrial and Organisational Psychology. She currently serves as Head of the Department of Psychology, AbdulHamid AbuSulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia. She holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Waikato, New Zealand, a Master of Human Sciences in Psychology, and a Bachelor of Human Sciences in Psychology from International Islamic University Malaysia. Her doctoral research focused on work family conflict, work family facilitation, coping, and well-being.
Dr. Ruhaya has more than two decades of professional experience spanning counselling, teaching, research, academic leadership, supervision, consultancy, and programme related academic responsibilities. She began her career as a student counsellor before entering academia and has served as a tutor, lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, and subsequently Head of Department.
Her teaching experience covers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and includes courses in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, Social Psychology, Consumer Psychology, Psychological Statistics, Experimental and Nonexperimental Design and Analysis, Personnel Psychology, Psychology of Human Resource Management, Consultancy Skills in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, Human Factors, Practicum in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, Industrial Training in Psychology, Research Projects, and Final Year Research Projects. This breadth of teaching provides her with substantial experience in evaluating curriculum coherence, progression of learning, research training, disciplinary content, and the alignment between academic preparation and professional competencies.
Dr. Ruhaya is also actively involved in postgraduate education and research supervision. She has supervised and co-supervised postgraduate research at Master and doctoral levels in areas including Industrial and Organisational Psychology, well-being, living wage, coping, mental health, Islamic psychology, cyberbullying, health psychology, dentistry, and behavioural health. Her supervisory experience includes both quantitative and qualitative research as well as intervention development, scale development and validation, and interdisciplinary research.
In addition to teaching and supervision, she contributes to academic quality assurance, curriculum development, professional consultation, and scholarly evaluation. Her recent appointments include serving as a subject matter expert for the review and validation of professional modules, writing course outlines for a Master of Management programme, contributing as a consultant to an academic job description and competencies framework, and serving as an external examiner for doctoral theses in Malaysia and internationally. She also serves as a Section Editor and reviews manuscripts for a range of academic journals, including publications in psychology, education, social sciences, economics and finance, health sciences, and Islamic studies.
Her scholarly work reflects a strong commitment to applied and interdisciplinary psychology. Her research focuses particularly on work family issues, coping, well-being, financial strain, living wage, employee behaviour, consumer psychology, and intervention development. She has published peer reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters, policy papers, reports, and training modules, and has participated in research funded by universities, government related bodies, and industry. Her research and consultancy activities have also involved collaboration across psychology, education, dentistry, health sciences, consumer studies, information technology, and organisational management.
