Four researchers from Kulliyyah of Pharmacy led by Associate Prof. Dr. Farahidah Mohamed produced ointments to relieve coughs and colds. The ointment, named iKool, was produced by Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Kuantan, Pahang.
The iKool ointment uses a combination of natural herbal -based and synthetic ingredients, of which only 5% is synthetic material composition, while 95% are natural ingredients from herbal essential oils and pharmaceutical grade mineral sources.
According to Dr. Farahidah, this ointment underwent thorough Research and Development (R&D) process for three years including registration at the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA). The ointment is also manufactured at IKOP Pharma Sdn Bhd located at Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, IIUM Kuantan Campus.
“This iKool ointment is one hundred percent produced in the R&D laboratory at Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, all studies and research are done meticulously because each ingredient used must meet the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and strict pharmaceutical practices,” she said.
“This iKool ointment is produced to help those who suffer from colds and coughs, for which they need to consume the medicine in the form of liquids and in turn will make them drowsy. This ointment can also be used in the month of Ramadan to relieve coughs and colds without having to consume any medicine orally.” She added.
There are some patients who dislike taking cough medicine orally because it will interfere with their productivity and this includes children who dislike liquid cough medicine. This ointment can be used as an alternative as it is formulated as an ointment and won’t cause the user to be drowsy after use.
She also added that, this iKool ointment can be inhaled or applied to desired areas and can relieve cough effectively. It is halal and safe and does not cause drowsiness unlike most cough medicines in the market.
“Daily productivity is not affected if a person has a cough and flu. Ikool can also provide freshness from its refreshing aromatherapy scent”. She said.
In the current pandemic, this ikool ointment can also be used to relieve mild symptoms of Covid-19. Although the original inspiration of ikool was creating an ointment for cough medicine as an alternative for the oral version, the active ingredient used is a substance that has also long been approved by the authorities that regulate medicines such as NPRA in Malaysia and the FDA in the USA.
“This ointment was introduced in the market in July 2020 during the covid-19 period and this helps to dilute thick phlegm, and relieve nasal congestion. The high percentage of natural ingredients and pharmaceutical grade used is perfectly formulated, making this ointment able to relieve symptoms such as sore throat, body ache, stuffy nose and difficulty breathing which are coincidentally symptoms experienced by Covid-19 patients.”
The Ikool ointment is available at all COOP Pharmacy branches nationwide and online through shopee. It’s cheap, effective, and portable anywhere you go.
