Overview

The name of the project indicates that it is all about the use of plants as a form of therapy, which in this case, relates to spiritual therapy. A significant amount of scientific evidence suggests that being around greenery can stave off stress, elevate mood and improve cognitive function, among other things. It is the fastest way for KOP members to connect with nature that has been known to be comforting, soothing and a natural human instinct. Certain houseplants have also been proven by NASA to significantly improve indoor air quality. In addition to cleaning the air, the process of photosynthesis during the day will replenish indoor oxygen level. Plant transpiration has also been shown to have a cooling effect on its surrounding provided the total leaf area in the room is significant.

In this project, a variety of house plants will be grown within the KOP building, including the open spaces and offices. All care and maintenance of the plants will be done by KOP members. It is the act of caring and being in contact with the plants that hopefully will create a calming feeling and reduces stress.

The mood elevating and air purifying characteristics of this project can be aligned to the UN sustainable development goal (SDG) 3 i.e. ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Being surrounded by plants and green environment may improve a person’s mood and consequently it helps in supporting good mental health. In addition, cleaner air generated from the plant should also improve overall well-being.

Overview

One of the evidence-based strategies is to expand and enforce smoke free areas. IIUM, being a gazette smoke free area under the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations, is seriously looking into this issue as it touches many components of the Sustainable Development Goals, and more importantly, the Maqasid al-Syariah.

Hence, having the Smoke Free Campus Flagship under the Kulliyyah of Pharmacy is indeed a step in the right decision. This provides the impetus towards increasing awareness regarding not only dangers of tobacco use, including cigarettes, shisha, and electronic cigarettes, but also offers help in the form of smoking cessation service.
