PETALING JAYA: The National Education Philosophy, which was formulated in 1988, is not widely known among educationists, the Rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia Prof Tan Sri Dzullkifli Abdul Razak said yesterday.

Most people would look at education models of other countries, he said after attending the “Thought Leadership Series on Education Policy From STEM to STREAM - Innovating Malaysian Education” yesterday.

He said the 30-year-old philosophy could be used as the basis of Malaysia’s education curriculum as it is one of the few  countries that have it. “This idea has been sidelined as we try to look at nations such as Singapore as a basis to improve and develop our education system,” he said.

“This philosophy aims to develop the potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner to produce individuals who are intellectually, emotionally and physically balanced and harmonious, based on a firm belief in and devotion to God.

“Such an effort is designed to produce Malaysian citizens of high moral standards, knowledgeable and competent.”

Meanwhile, Dr Lyana Khairuddin from Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute policy arm Centre for Public Policy Studies said during the forum that lifelong learning starts from kindergarten to the end of life.
