ACM-ICPC in IIUM


On the 4th – 8th July 2007, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) had the honour of hosting 4 distinguished Professors from the Association of Computing Machinery - International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) who were Prof. Bill Poucher (Executive Director), Prof. James Comer (Director Regional Contest), Prof. Jeff Donahoo (ICPC Web Services), and Prof. C.J. Hwang (Director Asia Contest).

The visit was to evaluate IIUM’s (in particular KICT) capabilities to host the Regional Programming Competition and World Finals in 2008 and 2011, respectively. Alhamdulillah, we are chosen to take charged of the Regional Competition in 2008 and will be soon confirmed on the World Finals, 2011.

ACM is an international professional organization based in the USA. It is a major force in advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students internationally. ACM auspices the International Collegiate Programming Contest since 1970 to foster creativity, teamwork, and innovation in building new software programs and enables students to test their ability to perform under pressure. For such a prestigious competition, IIUM has named this competition by a Muslim mathematician and scientist Abu Abdullah Mohammad Ibn Musa al-Khawarizmi . The influence of Khawarizmi’s knowledge on the growth of
science, in general, and mathematics, astronomy and geography in particular, is well established and recognized internationally up till today. His approach was systematic and logical, and not only did he bring together the then prevailing knowledge on various branches of science, particularly mathematics, but also enriched it through his original contribution. Al-Khawarizmi has been held in high repute throughout the
centuries since then. This event is one of the intellectual platform that IIUM shows recognition of his intellectual and scholarly leadership.

Hwang (Director Asia Contest).

The visit was to evaluate Malaysia’s capability particularly IIUM in hosting the Regional Programming Competition and World Finals in 2008 and 2011, respectively. We are proud to announce that IIUM has won the bid to host the Regional Competition in 2008 and will be soon confirmed on the World Finals.

Alkhawarizmi Programming Contest (APC) is regarded as the Malaysia’s local ACM-ICPC version and will be held yearly. APC will function as the preparation platform for Malaysian universities students’ towards the ACM-ICPC at the Regional Competition and subsequently World Finals. There will be international and national judges in this contest.

In order for Malaysian IPTAs to be an active and competent participants of ACM-ICPC, we have to have a local competition platform as required by the ACM-ICPC. Hence, the birth of this ACM-ICPC Alkhwarizmi Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC-APC). ACM-ICPC-APC 2007 will the first of the annually event of ACM-ICPC-APC.

ACM-ICPC-APC Objective

The APC is held with the following objectives:
* To provide a challenging programming competition platform among local universities students with their supervisors

* To recognize and reward Malaysian’s programming talents from the local universities

* To build competency in event management for the coming 2008 Regional and 2011 World Final Programming Championship events.

ACM-ICPC-APC Contest Trophy

The champion university will bring back the Alkhwarizmi Contest Trophy to their university for a year, plus an amount of cash for the student participants. The Alkhwarizmi Contest Trophy will be returned to the organizer on the following year of APC’s event. The trophy will be awarded to the new champion of the present year. This will continue annually. The second and third place winners will be awarded with an amount of cash accordingly with a first runner-up and second runner-up pewter plates.

ACM-ICPC-APC Invitation for Participation

ACM-ICPC-APC opens to all IPTA students particularly from IPTA’s Faculty or Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Each university may send maximum of 2 teams. Each team comprise of 3 students contestants and a coach. We welcome all IPTAs to be part of this meaningful competition event. The deadline for registration is 30th November 2007.
