This course illustrates the advanced management accounting concepts and techniques in planning, control and performance measurement for manufacturing and service enterprises. The course encompasses a discussion of both traditional and contemporary issues in management accounting and the design of management accounting systems. To reinforce learning, classes will be in the form of seminars and group discussions primarily led by the participants. Behaviouralaspects of management accounting will also be emphasised.
The course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of issues related to leadership in organization. It primarily focuses on managerial leadership as opposed to political, social or religious leadership. Topics include: nature of managerial work, leadership perspectives and theories, leadership effectiveness, power and influence, team leadership, leading change in organizations, leadership skills, and ethical leadership.
This course will provide an opportunity to apply advanced marketing knowledge towards developing competitive marketing strategies and programmes and towards problem solving in businesses, particularly in those firms involving complex and challenging marketing situations. The course will also address marketing decisions that are importantly affected by other functional areas involved in managing a business.
The course offers general techniques that are essential to conduct research from beginning to end. Topics discussed include Philosophy of research, research process, collection and analysis of data using various statistical techniques, searching and reading literature using print media and electronic media, writing techniques, and techniques to prepare literature reviews and research proposals.
The course contains major microeconomic and macroeconomic issues. The microeconomic issues include the theories of product demand and firms and market structure that are relevant to firms’ decision making. Under the market structure the focus will be on the strategic behavior of the firms based on a game-theoretic approach. The macroeconomic issues are based on an open-economic macroeconomic model. The focus will be on understanding macroeconomic fluctuations and growth and the relevance of policies in stabilizing fluctuations and in propelling growth.
The course will cover topics on influence of technology on policy making, influence of policy on technology development, use of common analytic tools to make business decisions, effect of computers on the environment, computer dependability and association of computer use with risk of casualties and property damage, use of encryption, to protect information and checking identities, Islamic philosophy with regards to information.
Among the topics cover are: Finance paradigms, the concept of money, securities valuation using discounted cash flow approaches, portfolio management, risk management, cost of capital and leverage.
The course content focuses on the quantitative research methods especially the multiple regression analysis. It starts with the classical regression analysis and then is expanded to include advanced quantitative techniques relevant to business, management, and finance fields. These techniques are modeling of time series data, limited dependent variables and structural equations.
The course will cover topics on the governance of corporations in contemporary business and socio-economic environments; in-depth analysis and evaluation of the role, responsibility, integrity and accountability of corporations and their directors, managers and officers etc.; and on the complex and multi-faceted relationships of the corporations with the government and society. Topics covering the corporation as a unique form of social organization acting as catalyst for reform towards enhancing the strength, resilience and morality of civil society of the nation and the world would be covered and critically examined from Islamic perspective.
MGT 7311 – Advanced Management Science
This course will cover the following topics: Linear Programming and Its Applications, Integer Programming, Goal Programming, Analytic Hierarchy Process, Data Envelopment Analysis, Brainstorming, Nominal Group Technique, Game Theory, Simulation, and Management Science from Islamic Perspective.
This course is specially prepared for DBA candidates who are interested to learn and later possibly to undertake qualitative research. The focus of this course is an exploration of the philosophical underpinnings of qualitative research, as well as explores its different research approaches and methods.
The course involves the consideration and application of advanced strategic models and analytical methods in management and related areas to support corporate level decision making and strategy formulation. Besides considering the typical business scenarios confronting companies, due consideration will also be given to the effective management of crisis situations confronting businesses.
