Expert Profile


An Associate Professor in the Department of Islamic Law, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws. Dr. Norliah obtained her first degree in Law (LL.B) from the IIUM in 1990. In 1991, she went on to pursue her Master in Comparative Laws (MCL) at the same university and then Ph.D in the field of Family Law in 2004. Her Ph.D thesis was entitled "A Study on the Malaysian Civil Law Relating to Matrimonial Property After Dissolution of Marriage." Since 2000, she has been on the panel of Legal Advisors to Shariah Legal Clinic of the Kulliyyah of Laws, specialization in matrimonial matters.
She has presented papers both locally and abroad and has produced several articles and books in the area of Family Law. Among the articles published are, "Duty of Full and Frank Disclosure in the Division of Matrimonial Property: the Law and Practice in Malaysia."Australian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences,2012, "The Role of Sulh towards the process of reducing the rate of divorce in the Kadhis' courts in Zanzibar: Following the Malaysian model". Australian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences, (2012) and "Right of Future Interest as Matrimonial Property: Special Reference to Earning Capacity", IIUM Law Journal, 2014. She is the co-author of Siri Perkembangan Undang-Undang di Malaysia, Undang-Undang Keluarga Islam di Malaysia" (Islamic Family Law in Malaysia) published by Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka in 2007. She also co-edited a book published by IIUM HarunHashim Law Centre in 2009, entitled Family Law and Procedures, Syariah Court Series. The latest book written with other co-authors from Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws IIUM is entitled, Family Law (Non-Muslims) in Malaysia, published by IIUM Press in 2012. In the same year, she co-edited a book entitled, "Contemporary Issues on Matrimonial Property".
She has been actively involved in a number of research projects funded by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education i.e Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), Exploratory Research Grant Scheme (ERGS) and Research Acculturation Grant Scheme (RAGS). Currently, she is a principal researcher of FRGS entitled, "Formulation of Legal Framework for Division of Matrimonial Property After Divorce : Incorporating of Future Business Interest".
Apart from supervising Master's and Ph.D students, she has been the coordinator for Family Law 1/ Law 2220 - from 2005 till 2012, also the coordinator for Family Law and Ethics Unit (FAME) from 2008-2010 and is currently the coordinator for Teaching in Learning of AIKOL.
