Expert Profile

Dr Mohd Zubairy Shamsudin is an assistant professor in ergonomics/human factors and occupational safety and health (OSH) for more than 13 years. Prior to joining academia, he worked in the oil and gas industry as a safety and health engineer and a certified safety and health officer until 2011. Throughout the experience, he is a trainer and speaker in ergonomics and human factors for various industries. Furthermore, he has actively participated in international and local conferences, workshops, and seminars.

Dr Zubairy has conducted numerous ergonomic risk assessments across a wide range of industry categories in Malaysia, including manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, and more. As a subject matter expert (SME) in ergonomics, he provided invaluable consultation services to identify and mitigate ergonomic hazards in the workplace in line with the Guideline on Ergonomics Risk Assessment at Workplace 2017, DOSH (Department of Occupational Safety and Health). This guideline outlines the recommended approach for assessing and controlling ergonomic risks to prevent work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Dr. Zubairy's expertise allowed companies to improve worker safety, increase productivity, and comply with these ergonomic regulations. His role as an SME involved analysing work tasks, evaluating risk factors, recommending control measures, training employees, and verifying the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions.

He is passionate about Human Factors and Ergonomics and obtained a PhD from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2018. He designed and developed an ergonomics risk evaluation technique specifically for manual material handling activities named Work Movement Task Analysis (WMTA). WMTA is an occupational ergonomics risk assessment tool applied to evaluate, manage and control work-related musculoskeletal risks. The risk classifications determine perspectives of control that requires further attention for a specific assessment strategy. Hence, his research and training interests are mainly on occupational ergonomics & human factors. Furthermore, occupational safety and health legislation, industrial hygiene, and behavioural-based safety are the next interesting topics.

During his time as an academic at Universiti Selangor (UNISEL) - 2010 until 2023, Dr. Zubairy supervised numerous undergraduate research projects spanning human factors/ergonomics, industrial hygiene, and safety. He guided students in conducting research, analyzing data, and presenting findings in these critical areas. This valuable experience in mentoring and research supervision has been carried over to his current role at the Kuliyyah of Allied Health Sciences (KAHS) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

Dr Zubairy is a NIOSH-certified Train the Trainer and an HRDF-exempted professional Train the Trainer. He is an appointed trainer by MSOSH (Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health) to provide industrial ergonomics training in Malaysia. Additionally, he served as a technical committee member in the development of the OSH club module in schools (initiated by DOSH-MSOSH). He was also a technical committee member for the development of the "Risk Management - Risk Assessment Technique based on ISO/IEC 31010:2019" training module, as well as the sub-committee for OSH research and publication under MSOSH. Currently, he is the technical lead for the development of the Ergonomics Improvement Support Programme (EISP) module, spearheaded by HFEM with the support of SOCSO.

With regard to networking, he is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Malaysia (HFEM), a member of the Malaysian Industrial Hygiene Association (MIHA) and a member of MSOSH. Administration positions, Dr Zubairy is a former committee of the Majlis Bersama Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi dan Penyelidikan & Pembangunan (MBKKP IPT/IPP) Malaysia. Meanwhile, he is a former Director, Centre of Occupational Safety and Health Risk Management (COSHRM), UNISEL.

He is actively participating in the Malaysian safety and health practitioner group and contributes knowledge and experience sharing.
